Ok, so 7-08 up to 7 RM are in the running.
Anyone here use a Howa or Vanguard for longrange?
I know the standard answer is 700, but the non-locking bolt and spring steel extractor get my mangina in a bunch. I have no doubt they work for the average joe, and .mil shooters. Just don't like those features and I've sold firearms for lesser prejudices.
I like the machining on the 1500/Vanguard, and the aftermarket. They are porky, but this seems like a good thing for intended use. Seems like a decent alternative.
What say the 'fire?

I like the Howa/Vanguard.No reason it wont work..But for a custom why bother? the 700 is as modular as there is, dont like the extractor? Put in a different one.

I have a Howa in 22-250 and it's great. The newest trigger they're putting in them seems great, but even the one I have is good and easy to adjust. It's been very accurate.

My 8" 22-250 and my 7-08 are built on Howas. I don't know that I would call them true "long range" rigs, but I really like the Howa actions. Travis

Yes...there are minor differences, but basically the same rifle. I think you can't go wrong with either.

Why not just set your variable scope on 6x?

The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.

Had a 7BR that I easily spotted hits at 200 yds, or 415, far as my range goes. Silhouette shooters use it, b/c it will topple rams at 500, yet recoil is nil. Travis, I agree - Vanguard is a nice action, I understand patterned after the L579, etc. No worry about a bolt handle falling off either Just Sayin, BTDT..

I'd like a 7mm that weighs ~8.5 lbs with VX-3 6.5-20x shooting a 162gr bullet. No brake. Need to spot my own shots at 500+ yards.
Which do I get... 7mm-08, 280AI, or can I get away with a 7mm RM?
Have tried to correlate actual experience with recoil calcs and they don't always jive. Need firsthand experience from you dudes, not calculations or guesses on my part.
Or do I need to step down to a 6mm or 6.5mm? Two words: MUZZLE BRAKE

I hate being alongside them, but I sure love shooting a rifle with a brake.

Had a brake on my 375 Ruger, adjustable brake. I kept it OFF.
I guess medium to longrange shooting is specialized enough that a guy could run a brake and just put the muffs on. Deal with the dust, if the brake vents downward like mine did.
I'd rather downsize the cartridge (and recoil) than use a brake. That's just me and I can't fault anyone for wanting to go a different direction.

You wear ear protection anyway, so why not make your rifle tame and your shooting better by using a brake?
I have them on my big mags too. Can see trace and impacts when shooting the .300 WM with 208's at 2900.
Preload the bipod and shove the butt pad into your shoulder with your squeeze bag hand. A rock solid hold and proper technique allows for spotting impacts. Score High's Tactical or Hunting Brakes vent out the sides and top, never the bottom so no dust.

Muzzle break with a compensator if you want to spot your own shots it;s usually a series of hole drilled in the top to reduce muzzle flip and help you stay on your target and this model is extreme effective as a brake as well . This is what you want good as they get http://www.jprifles.com/1.4.3_tre.php
