Looking for recommendations for clothing for first elk hunt. Will be hunting in Utah in November and was told to expect temperatures in the 20's. looking for something quiet and brown. Was leaning toward cabelas outfitters fleece with windshear in outfitter brown. Anyone have experience with it?
Thanks for your time

Gamehide is another brand to look at. Sheds water, cuts the wind, ideal for an outer layer.

Main point however you roll, layers.

Silk around the neck is something I would really miss. Bigger the better, like Wild-Rags, but most fabric stores will have a yard or two.

A couple yards of Polar Fleece or Artic Fleece will add hours to in field time as well.

A blast of cold can really make a differance. Most everyone here has seen someone stumbling around aimlessly because their cold, every cold snap!

+1. Can't beat a wild rag when the wind blows cold.

Layers, as said in one of the other posts.
Merino wool long johns.
Wool shirt.
Wool pants.
Wool sweater (some of the best are mil surplus or "Irish" fishermans).
Wool Jacket.
Wool Socks.
Wool felt liners (if you have those kind of boots).
Wool hat. (Stormy Kromer, mil surp "beanie")
Wool (Meriono) Scarf (or silk if that's to your liking)

Did I mention I like wool? wink

And good rain gear if the weather is warm enough for rain.

There was a saying the folks I knew when I was in Alaska used: Cotton kills!

I guess some of the newer fleece stuff works, but I have no experience as I'm old and started wearing wool (and layering) too many years ago for all cold weather activities.

Good luck on your hunt.

Can I ask why you favor the color brown? It's not a color I'd choose first for a general firearms season tag.

This isn't specifically about clothing, but it is about what you should always have with you when out in the Rocky Mountains hunting elk and Mule deer, etc.

I've posted it before but here it is again. This is a very well done video with a great deal of common sense regarding "survival" gear in the Rocky Mountains.

Enjoy your hunt and good luck.

I've got a mix of Sitka, wool, Russell APXG2, and fleece that gets use.

Stormy Kromer and silk scarves are every time out though.

If it's the berber fleece one you are refering too I used one on an elk hunt in Utah a few years ago.(Fishlake area). It's a good coat but very bulky- you wouldn't want to hike far in it. It's like wearing a sleeping bag it's that bulky. The outfitter brown is too dark for my taste, you might want to look at the high plains camo if more brown appeals to you. I also have the Cabelas "wooltimate" pull over in that color, it's a very nice anorak style and is sleeker than the berber.
Good luck with whatever you choose.

I too like wool. Hard to beat for the late season hunts.

I also like the Cabelas berber and wooltimate products. I agree with Jedi. The wolltimate jackets are less bulky, but probably slightly heavier than the berber. I've been out in -30 temps in this stuff and had to problem. Hands were a different story!! Still looking for gloves that can keep my previously frost bitten hands warm.

Definitely want wool long underwear and a good hat.

I try to keep brown to a minimum in the elk woods. Some clowns will shoot at any brown.

I have a couple of the Cabelas Legacy Fleece jackets with windshear lining. I like them for cold temps (rather than a parka), for early season hunts I typically carry one on the back of my pack but rarely use it. This year I seemed to wear a rain jacket most of the trip....

I hunt Montana in late October and November. I rarely go out without wearing my wool pants and wool sweater; wind/sleet shell and down jacket stuffed in my pack. Usually have to unzip the sweater when walking, then add the layers when I'm sitting behind the binos.

"...looking for something quiet and brown."

Quiet, sure! Brown? Nay.

Have you read the regulations where you plan to hunt? I seriously doubt Utah allows anything but safety orange as outer covering. Even IF you have some orange on, its not real wise to hunt in a rifle season with ANY brown on. Just ask any number of outfitters who have had their horses shot out from under them!

Please don't wear brown!

I used Rivers West outer wear and UA base layers and was fine in 20 degree weather and very very light weight and dry. Wool socks with wicking socks underneath and good boots. Wore Rocky 1200 gram boots. Dressed in layers with wool shirts and a vest on top. Sitka wear works the same but its a little pricey.
