Looks to be a Redhawk, no info on the FBI commemorative model

Value on one NIB is $800, Premiums are added for .357 cal

Adding the engraving and such....who knows really? Don't know if it was factory or another company did the work

Looks like a Security Six to me, but it's hard to judge size from the photo. Is it marked on the Frame as a Redhawk?

I'm sure that's a Security Six. Other than that, I don't know squat about it. Did the FBI ever use Ruger revolvers?

Most FBI agents carried a S&W 66 snubbie with the 2.5" barrel in the 70's.

This gun looks like a super nice Security Six to me.

Comparing to my GP-100 the rib and ejector rod are different - the GP has a straight rib that runs flat from the frame to the muzzle, this one rises up under the front sight like a Security Six. Also, the GP-100 has a straight ejector rod with nothing on the tip, this one has some sort of knurling on the tip. The front sight on this one is also more "security sixish" than the GP-100 sight.

This one has a roll pin at the front of the ejector rod housing, the GP-100 does not have that pin.

Unless they heavily modified a GP-100 to look like a Security Six, I'd say this one is the Security Six.

I guess it is.....grips sure looked like a Redhawk to me

SECURITY SIX (MODEL 117)
.357 Mag. cal., 6 shot, 2 3/4, 3 (late production only), 4, 4 (heavy), or 6 in. barrel, adj. sights, checkered walnut grips, square butt. Mfg. 1970-1985.
View Historic Prices
Grading 100% 98% 95% 90% 80% 70% 60%
$400 $350 $275 $200 $160 $150 $140
Last MSR was $309.
Add $15 for target grips.
Note that beginning late in the 150- serial number prefix, the grip frame was changed to have a more outward "highback" shape. Revolvers with the earlier "lowback" grip frame are generally considered more collectible. All revolvers having fixed sights and square butt grip frame with "lowback" shape to the backstrap were also marked "SECURITY-SIX". Only when the new highback gripframe came out were the fixed sight and square butt revolvers marked "SERVICE-SIX".
500 of this model were mfg. for the California Highway Patrol during 1983 (.38 Spl. cal.) in stainless steel only. They are distinguishable by a C.H.P. marking. Other Security Six Model 117 special editions have been made for various police organizations - premiums might exist in certain regions for these variations.

Reference Of Ruger Firearms lists a "FBI National Academy 50th Golden Anniversary" commerative. Ruger model GA-36HT. Adjustable sights, 6" heavy barrel with target grips. Three levels of engraving produced...none, 1/3 and 2/3 coverage. If a 2/3 coverage gun there were 30 made and engraved by Ken Hurst Engravers. There's more info. PM me your e-mail and I'll send a page scan to you.

It's a Security Six and no, the FBI never issued Ruger revolvers.

It's a commemorative, they don't use "stock grips" on such, and yes, it's a Security Six. Darned good little sixguns.

I've had a couple of them, and they are a fine gun. I wish I had that last one back, I could shoot 1" groups with it at 25 yards with Skeeter Skelton's favorite load, and toss that bullet at 1465fps doing so. I let a cousin talk me out of it, and he won't sell it back to me.
I'd love to find a 4" to carry.

Bumping this one from way back....does anyone know what these revolvers are worth with the presentation case? The one I'm referring to doesn't have scrolling and looks like this

I'm not sure how rare they are but I've only seen one in person...how many were made?

Most definitely a Security Six. Prices range anywhere from $475.00 to 800.00 depending on condition. I watched one NIB on GB go thru three cycles at $950.00 buy now price. Don't know what it finally sold for. Commemoratives usually don't bring a whole lot more. Engraved like the OP's picture probably put it in the upper category, as will a presentation case and paperwork. The four inch stainless Security Sixes seem to be the most sought after by folks wanting to carry and shoot them. Two really nice six inch ones pictured here. When you get right down to it, they are worth whatever one is willing to pay and/or how strong the desire is.

At first glance, it it true that the Security six, in a single photo, does look like a Redhawk. Of course, side-by-side it would be easy.

The Security Six has a pinned in front sight, the Redhawk does not (except for the newer 4.2").

The Security Six has a pin thru the front of the ejector shroud to hold the locking pin and spring. The ejector on the Redhawk doesn't latch in the shroud, therefore no pin or spring.

The end of the ejector rod on the Security Six is checkered, not so on the Redhawk.

There are a few other differences other than size, but the ones listed are easy to see in the pictures. Wish I had a set of those smooth Ruger grips for mine....

S&W should have made a Model 13 FBI commemorative.
