before I start, I know no pics didn't happen. But, I went out with my son and a friend and we got 15 gray squirrels and 1 fox squirrel. I was using a 24Sav .22/20, my friend a Benelli 20ga and my son a 1100 12g. We roughly added up and we'd seen better than 40 between the 3 of us. We were out by 9:30. Will try to learn how to put pics up...

Went this afternoon. Got there at 3PM thinking I'd find a nice spot to set up with my .22 before they were moving. Dang things were already moving.
Was right on the edge of town with houses in three directions so had very limited area to shoot in. Trees in full leafage so saw most on the ground. Between 3 and 4 saw twenty but could only shoot at four. Hit them all but couldn't find one . Only saw one after 4PM and couldn't shoot at him. Guess I should have got there earlier.
Congrads on your great hunt.

wb47, just curious, were you using hollow points or solids on the squirrels you hit. I've lost 2 so far this season, both hit with solids, but I'm not changing, they're to accurate in both my .22s. I chalked it up to body hits, and both were lost in tall briars. I'm using CCI SV LR for all my squirrel hunting.

Sounds like you might want to invest in a sooper pooper pellet gun!

Congrads on your great hunt. Might want to see if your rifle likes the CCI quick-shok. If you hit 'em you should find 'em as they knock HOLES through them. Just a thought...

When I first got my .17HMR, I thought it would be great on squirrels. Not such a great idea. Came home with several 1/2squirrels. Head shots worked pretty well though..

Was using CCI Green Tag solids. I have a tool I bought years ago that you slip the round in either end and just a tiny bit of the tip sticks our. You run the tool and round over a file and it shaves of a little lead making it flat tip. It works very well but sure gums up a file. I picked up the wrong box as I left so shot with the round nose. Shoots to the same point of aim.
Have tried the CCI with the four way split nose. Sure messes up a squirrel you intend to eat. Not as accurate as I'd like.
I was hunting in a pecan orchard. Grass was about 10inches high. Probably dozens more squirrels I never say. No under brush at all, so the squirrels could see me better than I could see them. Just sat under a tree and let them come to me.

I've tried them over the years. They work better on fox rather than gray squirrels[IMHO]. When it gets down to shootin' time, succking your lips or kissin' the back of your hand works just as well......just sayin' maddog

I used to use one of those Olt bellows type calls on treys. It worked so damn good I threw it out after a couple outing, took the fun out of it! Now that Im old Im thinking it would be nice to use one again

Now that Im old Im thinking it would be nice to use one again I'd forgotten about those Olt calls. Will try to find one. FUNNY STUFF, my former boss that went hunting with me last Sat. called me Monday morning laughing because he's retired and can go anytime he wants. Kept on taunting me till I finally told him to K-M-ASS. Later texted me at school and said he saw 1 little squirrel and couldn't get a shot at it. hahahaha, serves him right.

The squirrels were out yesterday afternoon. Got there about 2PM. Saw 7 or 8 but too far away. About 4:45 they really started moving. Had 8 (limit) by 5:15. There were still four in a tree in front of me when I left.
First ever limit with a .22.

Paco Kelly makes a tool like that, except his can make hollow points and resize the bullet a bit to fit various size barrels (.222, .223, .224 etc). I've never tried one, but I don't know why.
