Doesn't have horns, but had a wonderful time nontheless. This is my 3rd year in a row with Spur Outfitters in Encampment, WY and I can't say enough good things about the people, food & lodging. 1st Class all the way.

Used a .30-06 w/handloaded 168 gr TTSX's and the range was 263 yds. It took 2 shots to put her on the ground. Don't let anyone tell you a '06 isn't enough gun for elk.

I wish I had all that cow meat!

What kind of hunt was it - backcountry, walk & stalk, headquartered out of the lodge, spike camp, etc?

HQ from the lodge. We'd be on a ridge prior to sunrise and glass when it got light enough. We'd formulate the stalk on if they were bedded/moving and wind direction.

Make no apologies for no horns or antlers - you can't eat them and a freezer full of cow is much better than one full of air.

Every year I put in for cow tags and generally get one. while I also buy an over-the-counter bull tag, I'll take which ever comes first. When it comes to Wyoming antelope, I can buy 4 doe tags for $140 while a single buck tag costs $225 and as a result have yet to buy a buck tag. CO deer are pretty much the same - for me they are targets of opportunity while hunting elk and I couldn't care less if they have head gear or not.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Nephew from MI killed two cow elk in the Shirley's Oct. 1 and 2, didn't care about antlers. Packed one just over a mile downhill, drove to the other. He said packing "sucked but was still cool once the elk was in the truck".
