Roley Poley blacktail buck fell to the 270 Titus last night. Long drag down the hill but very steep so he passed me most of the way! All's good with the world. I love this gun! grin

Nice deer! More details?

Titus was a Roman emperor who finished building the Coliseum, managed the State during the Vesuvius eruption, and put down the Jewish rebellion by sacking Jerusalem and destroying the Second Temple. Just your average Roman tough guy who didn't take a lot of guff from people. Sort of the Vladimir Putin of his day. An apt name for what I understand to be a pretty hot cartridge.

Obviously .270 Titus bullets don't bounce off deer hides like .270 Winchester bullets do! smile

Roman history aside I seem to recall the cartridge was developed by a gent named Bliss Titus. It is a good wildcat and Savage should have jumped all over it as a factory chambering.

That 270 Titus, you have, what is the Case from ?

Nice rack! The only better I've seen was out on the Monterey peninsula. They are tame as sheep there - in town of course. A herd grazed the cemetery behind the hotel we stayed in. Was a sight to behold!

Thanks all. Had some super hunts the first few days for some king bucks I've been watching all summer but this deer was not on my radar. There are some real whoppers here. Ironeagle84 and I are headed out this afternoon to try and get him one. This one is a dandy for it being just a 3 point at 18" wide with nice deep forks. grin

But listen, I gotta say that just carrying a 99 in the deer woods is the real prize. Most blacktail hunts I never see a deer at all and come home happy anyhow. While I'm looking at the stock and running my hands over the checkering I dream about big ones that'll be along any minute. The nicer the gun the better the experience!! Life's too short to hunt with an ugly gun right?!

The Titus is a 300 Savage necked to .277. I outside turn the necks by hand but otherwise it's very straightforward and easy to make. I see no practical advantage over a 300 Savage, in fact, it limits you to smaller bullets. But, it is what it is and it works. I have it loaded with 115 gr. Nosler Custom Competition hollow points anticipating coyote hunts this winter. I know, I know, not a deer bullet.
FYI, complete pass thru the ribs and offside shoulder so not as explosive as you would imagine.
B.C. is .375, velocity about 2800 fps IIRC, 200 yard zero. Lots of season left, so I hope to help a couple buddies get the ones I couldn't.
It's all fun and games. grin grin

Last night for Ironeagle84/Marty's hunt, we walked up these open ridges and jumped one buck, but no shot for Marty, glassed some ground and saw a couple does. Then headed down right before dark to get in position. Right at last available light, and I mean LAST, Marty got his 50 yards from where I'd gotten mine the night before. These bucks are staying in bed until dark thirty! Followed my drag trail down the same gully to the bottom! grin His is a 20" ish 2x3. Pig of a deer. He was super excited as he needed the meat for this winter, we had a terrific evening, and we looked like pro's tonight! Woohoo for Marty. Sad part was, he shot it with one of those funny rifles with a handle on the left side in some obscure cartridge called 30 1906 something...
