L-R: 6mm Rem, 7 Mashburn Super, 358 Norma.

The 6mm Rem is a 1947 M70 transition action. Blackburn bottom metal, Brux #3 SS 8-twist 24" barrel, Legend Edge stock. The metal is Gunkoted to resemble a matte blue finish. A 3.5-10X40 matte CDS in low DDs. With the #3 barrel it weighs 8 pounds 11 oz.

The Mashburn is a virtual copy of BobinNH's baby. M70 Classic action with Wisner extractor and Williams bottom metal. Pre-64 trigger, follower and mag spring. Custom bolt handle. Krieger #2 9-twist 24" barrel, Legend Edge stock. A 3.5-10X40 matte B&C in low DDs. It weighs 8 pounds 5 oz.

The 358 Norma is a M70 Classic Stainless action with Williams extractor. Slimmed bottom metal, pre-64 follower and mag spring. Pac-Nor 12 twist barrel. Legend standard fill stock. It used to be a 24" barrel, I had it shortened to 22 1/2". Lost about 50 fps, but it feels better in the thick stuff. A 1.75-6X32 with Premier Reticles #4 reticle. 8 pounds 7 oz.

To make it complete a guy really needs a 223 on the bottom end. But I have no intentions to try and "improve" on these three.

Damn nice setup! I'd love to do a 6mm in an M70...

Sometimes, these querys can be difficult and there are many excellent choices, depending on one's finances, shooting ability and where/what/when you will hunt.

I have had the chance to go to Africa, didn't, just not enthralled by all the hoopla of that type of hunting. I have/had friends from there from a boy at the time of "Mau Mau" in Kenya, to the present and have received invitations to hunt, but, I am really only interested in northern and western Canadian hunting, so, with that in mind, here are some combos that I would choose, were I to sell 29 of my rifles and keep just three.....WHAT a GHASTLY thot! smile

1.Dakota 76-.338WM, "Hill Country" McMillan stock, custom banded irons and rear Talley, Talley QDs, Leupy 1.75xg MHD. This rifle weighs a bit over 8 lbs., is EXTREMELY accurate and will put my "max." handloads of BOTH the 250 NP and the 250 Horn. IL into the same .7ish groups at 100M. It is finely balanced, the BEST of the "Mod. 70" type, especially in it's excellent breeching, similar to the original "Patterne 98" actions made for RIMMED cartridges and the work was done by Martini Gunmakers, need I say more?

The "downside" is that it would cost $11,000+ to replace and while I did not pay that, being a fair hand at finding "deals" on fine guns, ( I bought this new in spring, 1994), that is too much for most hunters. But, I have found in obtaining a gun collection, now seriously diminished by recent selling as I am too old, a bit "bunged up" and my wife has been ill for 3+ years, so keeping the 50+ mostly highend guns I had at the beginning of 2010, is rather foolish, that one CAN find and buy many of one's "dream guns" if you REALLY want to and it has been a lot of fun to do so.

2. Classic STS Mod. 70-.338WM, with some of the necessary mods one should do on these very sound actions, again by Martini's, in a basic, older and oft-used Micky Fwt. "standard fill" handle, Brockman-Talley, old, as new B&L 4x40 scope and Marble's "Sourdough" front. I love the .338WM and this is one of my half dozen "truck guns" for harsh uses in BC's usually crappy, wet weather. It does EXACTLY what I built it to do and I don't care if I drop it, a horse rolls on it or it gets left in a damp tent wet for a time as I am too tired, sick or just delayed to look after it.

3. I found, actually my "best" buddy who used to post here, did, THE smoothest, slickest and so "NICE", 1946 "Transition" P-64 action. I installed an ordinary "salvage" Classic STS Fwt. .270Win. bbl, Talleys, Brockman, front ramp/Sourdough and then, my buddy sold me a Micky Edge MKX style Edge blank INLETTED for the P-64 Fwt. that he had ordered from Rick here.

This, is one of the best fitting synthetics FOR ME and I had "brno 284" who posts here and does fine, fine work on synthetics, install it. GAWD, I LOVE this and while I also have 2 fine original P-64 Fwt-.270s, this is, of the 12 or so, .270s I have now owned, my alltime favourite. It wears a Swaro Z3 and it shoots my favourite .270 load of the 150NP over enough RE-22 to get 2900 at the muzzle of the 22" bbl.

So, for ME, this is my probable first choice, but, I have other pairs, trios and combos, as we totally obsessed gunaholics tend to do, so, maybe I might choose a different set next time! smile

I have no plans to hunt Africa at this point in my life, so I'll throw out three that have served me well throughout North America.......

Top to bottom:
.223AI
.350 Rem Mag
.257 Wby
[Linked Image]

I think the only thing I'd change with my 3 gun battery would be a .264 Win Mag in favor of the .257 Wby. As soon as the barrel goes, that is exactly what this .257 will become. With the 223 AI covering paws and the .350 claws, the .264 should be "magic" on all of NA's hooved animals....................

Sooner or later our heritage of hunting is going to be a rich mans sport and the words "Outfitter" and "Hunt Industry" will be synonymous with cancer and A.I.D.S. among blue collar hunters like me and my family! (A.L. Williams - 2010)

Fifth, usually we agree on things. I like your second list, but my 300 is a WSM blush...I'd like to have a 300 H&H to show off, but such is not the case. However, I do have the 270 and 375 H&h to go with the 300 wink...:

If I could add a 4th, it would be a .358 Win; probably the favorite of all my rifles.

That's all I need or really want.

for my uses I would have picked .22LR,.223 and .30-30 but since .22LR ammo became extinct I'll take a .223, .243 and .30-30 and use a good pellet rifle for practice/plinking.
