Did it yesterday! I will report back with either good news or silence. If silence it is because said PC is no longer functional after bouncing off the wall at a high rate of speed.

I use XP. Yesterday I helped a neighbor get his Windows 8 machine running. Once I figured out how to drill down through all the blather to the real controls it turned out that it couldn't read the Internet from the cable company router through the Ethernet port but would report a good connection. Seems odd it would just sit there but I don't do networking at least if I can help it.

What baffles me is why he has to be online and logged into somewhere just to play solitaire.

8.1 is supposed to restore the Start menu and give you an option to log in directly to the desktop rather than the App screen. So it "should" be worthwhile.

Didn't know it was out yet, probably try it next week. Work to do on the deer blinds and a bit of deer hunting to do this weekend.

We are used to Windows 7, our son gave his mother a new laptop for her birthday, Windows 8. What a nightmare. eek

We got a copy of "Windows 8 for Dummies", the book spent the first couple of pages telling us Windows 8 is a POS and whatever you do, don't buy Windows 8. shocked

For those condemned to windows 8 the following may help you survive:

Try to do everything in the window 7 style interface.

Replace the builtin useless views with views from somewhere else. Example get pdf reader from Adobe.
