Thank you for the response John. If I buy an Axis I will factor in the cost of a Timney. The last two rifles I've bought have been Vanguard S2's and though they may cost more than an Axis plus a Trigger I have been happy with them. I still am contemplating purchasing an Axis for my son. He wants a .243 for coyotes but at his age he may shoot it once and then decide he likes his AR better and never pick it up again.
Don't roll those bloodshot eyes at me.

If there is anything that tastes better than antelope backstraps, lightly breaded and fried medium rare, I sure as heck don't know what it is. Axis backstraps.
Its all right to be white!! Stupidity left unattended will run rampant Don't argue with stupid people, They will drag you down to their level and then win by experience

JB, Seems like I pushed a button I didn't mean to push! I understand your role in the process and I respect and even envy that. It's just a case of sticker shock for me. As you noted, I find that "regular" bullets get it done for most of what I need to do. With my bison tag I'm hunting on the National Elk Refuge some and they are encouraging non lead ammo so I bought some 30cal 180gr Etip blems from shooters pro shop. I chose that bullet because I could get it at half price and I'm certain it will do the job. I've nothing against anybody choosing a high dollar high performance boutique bullet if that's what works for them. I also don't have a problem with folks using a 22cal rifle for deer and antelope if it works for them. I do hope they use a good bullet for it though. Reading about people using 55gr ballistic tips makes me squeamish but it's on them, not me. So, in conclusion, Sorry bout that, didn't mean to rile you none.
Stupidity is expensive If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

I hope to try the CE Raptor 40 gr. .224 out of my .22-250 on live critters, probably does and hogs.
The thing about hunting bullets being expensive, I don't shoot that many. I'll get them sighted and then look for meat. The overall cost won't be that bad.
I use std. C&C bullets for everyday shooting.

JB,
FWIW- My son has an Axis .270, which had a horrible trigger. He dropped in a Timney, and is completely happy with it. I think the Axis is a good, relatively low-cost firearm, with great accuracy potential, being a Savage.

the first centerfire hunting rifle i owned was a Savage in 270....ive owned 4 different Savage centerfires(also have a Savage rimfire)....most accurate rifle ive owned has been a Savage in 25-06.....that said they just feel clunky in my hands compared to the Kimber or even Rem Seven's that i really like....but thats just personal preferance on fit and nothing more....
when i first bought that 270 it was the only centerfire in town i could afford working after school....and it was a hell of an accurate and dependable rifle that i put alot of rounds through before giving it to my brother for his first hunting rifle....

rattler,
I might try them in my Bushmaster and see how they do.
We also have some heavier .224 Raptors that require faster twists, and I have a .223 WSSM with a 1-9 Lilja on it, and a .224 Texas Trophy Hunter (.224/6mm Remington) with a 1-8 Brux that would probably work quite well with the "heavies."

i dont have a big cased 22, never got into prairie dog shooting cause ground squirrels are everywhere and always just used my deer rifles for yotes cause i was never saving hides.....the AR is the only 22 centerfire we have at the moment, Darla calls it her "stress reducer"

From what I have read over the years, this seems to be the case. I wonder if she was better than John if he would admit it?

Congrats John/Eileen......... With long mono metals, 100 gr. may need faster than ten twist. Those 9 twist Remington's may work. For my ten twist .240, I'm going to try the 88 gr. Raptor. I know what that gun does with 85 and 90 gr, bullets. DF

Anytime a woman asks a question, you just say, "Yes Dear" - unless it pertains to money. Lol. No - I am sure she will give JB a good run Probably had a great mentor.

Congrats to Eileen! The meat from the antelope doe I killed last year was some of the best meat I've ever enjoyed.
