I have not found a reference, so I decided to take it to the experts.
When i bought my 99e and 99c in 1970, I also was drooling over a 99 with a hexogon barrel. Definitely heavier, but it was way too much for a college student to swing (in cash)
What was this model? Do such exist, and how would one go about buying one?
thanks!

Take a look at this one on GB, it may be what you are thinking about. This is a late model version of the 1895 (poor version). some folks like them, collectors view them as a knock off. diferent strokes for diferent folks. gunbroker- 1895 anniversory SAVAGE 1895 ANNIVERSARY EDITION 308 CAL 24" OCTAGON BARREL ENGRAVED RECEIVER WALNUT STOCK AND WALNUT SCHNABEL FOREND BRASS CRESSENT BUTT PLATE, BRASS INDAIN MADALLION INLAYED IN STOCK. ONE OF 9999 MFG 1970 ONLY GUN HAS ORIGINAL BOX AND MANUEL, GUS IS UNFIRED BUT IT HAS BEEN RACKED SO WILL SAY 99% OVER ALL CONDITION. THESE GUNS ARE SCARCER THEN HENS TEETH. TRY TO FIND EITHER ONE. REMEMBER THIS GUN IS 36 YEARS OLD AND COUNTING S&H $35.00 INSURANCE INCLUDED

By the way Savage99 the barrels are octagon. We knew what you meant but just thought you would want to know the correct barrel term. 8 sides, Hexagon is 6 sided

1. yes, I know the difference between hexagon and octagon, lucky I did not say heptagon! 2. uhh, this is not what I remember. Acknowledging that it has been 35 years, was there another octagon barrel Savage? Take a look at this one on GB, it may be what you are thinking about. I have seen two different octagon barrel models (both uncataloged insofar as I know) other than the 75th anniv. model. One supposedly used the barrels left over from the 75th anniv model and utilized the C wood which was the then current wood. The other is a much earlier model and appears for all practical purposes to be an early B model with a 22" octagon barrel. Murray states the early B had a 26" barrel only. Maybe some others with more experience can tell you more.

Only other octogon's I can think of would be true 1895's and 1899B's.. both of which were stopped being made much more than 35 years ago;).
1895 made from 1895 thru 1899 (?), 1899B from 1899 to 1915. Maybe you saw a used, minty 1899B?

octagon with C wood would line up with what my creaky memory insists on. Now, where to buy, this is an unfulfilled youthful wish list!<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> I have seen two different octagon barrel models (both uncataloged insofar as I know) other than the 75th anniv. model. Not many of 'em around. Will be pretty pricey these days.
