If I was in that boat I would pick the 53gr TSX, and not look for much else.

I've no doubt they would. I haven't used them(55gr TBBC), and they don't seem to be available OTC locally.

I hear good things about the 50 gr. TTSX as well. This seems to be the only suitable 22 cal. Barnes on the shelves locally so is what I have loaded...

50 gr. TTSX if they will shoot for you. My 1 in 14 twist .222 did not digest them frown

I keep forgetting,if twist matters or not.

Seems like a 50'Max would stabilize,reliably?!?(grin)

I typically start with the quarter-bores when hunting deer. However I have taken a few deer and hogs with .224 bores and smaller.

I know the OP has a 223, not a 222 Rem, but FWIW,

Maybe this will be of benefit to the OP.

Here are a couple of deuces that do fine with the 45 gr. TSX.

[Linked Image]

Im using the following as my go to load in my Cooper model 21 in 222 Rem. It has a 1 in 14 twist.

[Linked Image]

In my Sako Riihimaki in 222 Rem., which has a 1 in 16 twist the following is my go to load.

[Linked Image]

This dink was shot in the neck at 80 yds. +/- with a Cooper in Tac 20 (20-2230) loaded with a 40 gr. V-Max at 3,750 fps MV. It dropped at the shot, but one can note the lack of penetration. Sure would not suggest a Texas heart shot with this projectile and velocity.

This hoglet was shot at 40 yds. +/- with a 45 gr. TSX out of a 222 rem.

Neither of the above rifles stabilize the 53 gr. TSX. With careful shot placement at moderate distances one should have no problem killing deer. Especially if employing a CNS shot. Not my first choice, but definitely doable.

53 gr tsx won't stabilize in my 1:14 Vixen, 45gr tsx does though.

Dat 50 Vmax is skookum and it will stabilize in a 1 in 14...

I'm skeered schittless that it will 'overstabilize' in the new 1 in 8 when the smith gets done with it.... eek

Have no fear Ingwe, neither a 6 1/2 nor 7 inch seems to 'overstabalize'. They shot fine in both the above for me.

Once you hit those quicker twists you are going to wonder why you didn't do it sooner. Puzzles me about the 22's & 243's both as just why we can't get rifles with decent twist off the shelf to match the great bullets available for both.

Excessive RPM is to be avoided at all costs. I'm happiest with 100yd groups, which illustrate a slight ellipse,as they will tumble on impact and are the pinnacle of KiIlling Power.

I gotta make a note of that....tumbling could make the mushroom oblong, and kill even quicker....Hmmmmmmm...so much to think about! And yeah, 100 yd groups rule!
