I could use some guidance on a knife I've found. It's marked Morseth. Very nice blade in excellent condition, about 4", stag, very nice heavy leather sheath. It's for sale here locally and is priced at $175. After googling Morseth it appears that both the original Mr. Morseth an his grandson made some nice knives but I have no sense of the real value. I've been looking for a good and somewhat unique working knife. At $175 it will be a bit of a reach for me so I don't want to make a frivolous purchase.
Your input will be appreciated.

huntsman, the blade has only one marking, Morseth. Nothing else. Do you know if that is how one of the original Morseth's would be marked? I understand he originally used planer blades for his steel. That heat treating line that runs above the cutting edge is quite clear. I can't remember the proper name for it. I'm thinking it was one of the planer blade knives that the senior Mr. Morseth made.

Maybe. Steve Morseth made knives after Harry's death. But in the early 70s he stopped and sold everything to A.G. Russell, who still owns the Morseth brand name today. There are knives/parts that were marked "Morseth" but sold as "kits" to the public who assembled/finished them themselves. And there are other that are AGR made. I believe some "in house" and would assume some on contract........

2muchgun, do you have any idea how the original Morseth markings differed from the kit knives? The Morseth name on the one I'm looking at is marked Morseth along the top of the blade parallel to the blade. I've seen some on google that were marked back by the hilt. In at least one pic a Russell kit was market Russel Morseth. ???

I'll get pics tomorrow. Just to add some spice, the seller has offered to include a knife by Riley [sic?] Lorett of Yale, OK. Have you all heard of him?

One of the members who has an interest in the Morseth knives and has been studying them for years has given me the information I need. It's one of the A.G. Russell made knives. That's what I thought but wasn't sure about. It's the original Russell sheath, blade marking from the Russell period and laminated steel blade. You can clearly see the line where the two types of steel are evident parallel to the cutting edge but just above it on the blade. Clean used condition with expected carry wear for a hunter and some discoloration on the blade. The blade is not boogered at all. So, what is a reasonable price for a Russell Morseth?

I would clean the dreaded solder joint with soda and use it up.

Love the Morseth! I have one similar, but with the three piece stag handle. I think you got a great buy at $200.00. The laminated steel makes a very good using knife that holds an edge very well and is tough. It will rust though. Below is a picture of one of my Morseths that I have used hard since 1972.

Msthsr- Nice! The more I study on the Morseth knives the more impressed I am. I hope you did not take it wrong with my statement. That is a great knife. Will worth the price u gave. On mint knifes you will see rust spots around the guard on a lot of old knifes. This is from acid used to clean the joint to keep solder flowing. That was the way it was done in those days. Love the swedge work on your knife. On Harry's knife the sheath is wonderful- That style was used on Loveless knives from the same period. I wonder if they were utilizing the same sheath maker.

Rick, not a problem. You answered my question and I appreciate it. U 'l do exactly as you suggested. There's no pitting anywhere, just some staining and discoloration. I like the original sheath but it's showing its years. The style of the new ones looks the same but I don't know about the maker.
Thanks for the good input.

I believe the Russel "Morseths" were made by Bob Dozier. Cisco Cisco, that's my understanding as well. On his web site he says he made a lot of Morseth knives while at Russell. I don't think there's any way to tell if this is one of Dozier's pieces but most likely it is. Wish there was to be certain. That would be double fun.
