J&G Sales has a 99 in 7mm-08 for over $1,100. Maybe it's just me, but this seems like a lot of cash for a late model 99.

This is my rifle. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

it's a rare caliber for the '99...may be the reason.

The 7mm-08 is a 7mm bullet (.284") in a necked down .308 cartridge case. A hand-loaded to maximum velocity 7x57mm beats the 7mm-08 a tad in muzzle velocity, but it is not available in a Model 99 Savage rifle.

For about half of the cost of that 7mm-08 you found, you could have either a pre-mil Model 99 in .300 Savage caliber or for a bit more (or even the same price), you would have a wide choice of Model 99s in .308 Winchester.

I would frankly prefer having a Model 99 in .308 Winchester or even .300 Savage as opposed to a 7mm-08 simply because the .300 Savage and the .308 Winchester cartridges have a somewhat larger choice of bullet weights and will stabilize heavier bullets than a 7mm-08 thus making either one of those .30 calibers a better choice for larger game as well as both being exceptionally fine deer cartridges.

By the same token, some fellas (usually collectors) want to have one of each caliber Savage made in the Model 99. But to me, that is the only reason to choose a 7mm-08 over either of the .30 caliber cartridges available in the Model 99 Savage rifle.

I.E., I don't see any real advantage in having the 7mm-08 other than to say you own one. Buttttttt... different strokes for different folks, I guess. grin

Around here you can walk into most sporting goods stores and get all the 7mm08 ammo you want. Not so with 308 or 300 savage. If I wanted a 7mm08 to hunt with or just shoot I could get one for less, but it wouldn't be a 99 savage. If you want a Savage 99 in 7mm08, it's going to cost you some bucks. To me a Savage 99 in 7mm08, would be a great snag, especially with all the readily available ammo. As long as it had the rotary magazine and not the removable magazine.

You won't find a factory original 7-08 with a rotary mag.

That is the main reason I don't have one right now. I've come close to getting one with a removable magazine on two different occasions, but I can't make my self buy one. To me a Savage 99 = rotary magazine. I have a 99E in 308 that will likely get converted to 7mm08 one day before too long.

It was an EG style stock, VERY cool gun. Factory special production, wouldn't really call it a prototype. Got pics of it from one of the SavageFests.

Thats a steal at that prices
As Mike-Light foot said they sell for a lot more
and as Roy-Fireball Said, 2200.00
I sold 2 of them around that price years back.
And still have 2 in a C.

So that brings up lots of questions. EG style wood as in schnable fore end and pistol grip checkered stocks? What type of checkering, 40's/50's, pressed, later cut, ?? Or to be era correct with the 7mm-08, schnable fore end and straight 99A butt stock? Would love to see photos of that.

There's another one? Same configuration as the one above?

Very nice! You probably have the box and hang tags still on it, too. grin
