I have always wanted a .308 semi auto. I like the Springfield M1, but lately I like the idea of an AR platform. I own Garands and 03's but do not know if the AR will suit me. It would be my first.

Thoughts - S&W I have held, nice but bulky...

I need the help of the fire

Armalite-for a lower priced option, they have offered the AR10 longer than anyone else.

Larue Tactical for a high end gun.

If you favor accuracy stay away from the piston guns like the Scar.

I built my own based off Mega MA-10 receivers and a Lilja barrel. It is just as accurate as my Remington 700 Varmint and not too heavy.

The ergonomics of the SCAR were not for me.

I am looking at the MP10 myself, cannot find a lot of info on them however except GunBlast review. I like the 18 inch barrel and 7.5 pound weight.

They will be bulky compared to an AR-15. You can't lengthen the receiver and have it any other way. OTOH they will be very compact compared to most full sized battle rifles such as the M-14 or the Garand.

I like my DPMS. Many others here will run them down and I cannot say I've put ten thousand rounds through mine, but so far, so good. Much less bulky than the Garand I traded for it. Much less unwieldy. The Smith came out right after I got mine.

I've still got the hots for a tanker Garand in 308 with one of those Medesha scout mounts on it.

You do know Ruger is making one right? I think Gunblast.com has a review on it. I've got Ruger's piston AR and the only thing I don't like is the trigger. I'd guess 8 pounds. Its an easy fix, just haven't replaced it yet.

I have a couple of Armalite AR-10's. They are solid rifles. With a bull barrel they get pretty heavy. One is a heavy SASS rifle, the other a carbine, which now wears a 18" Shilen/Rainier Arms barrel and Vortex hider.

S&W's 308 is a lighter carbine, but has a pencil barrel from what I saw of them. Have not heard how they shoot.

Sig's 716 has some nice features to it. If reliable it might be a good carbine, but Sig's have been iffy for me, recently.

Realize 16" barrel .308's are an acquired taste, too, especially if they have a muzzle brake crazy

I have an Armalite that I like.
It is very much a pig compared to an AR15, however.

I really like my RRA LAR-8 Predator. 8.5lbs witha 20" SS factory lapped cryo treated match barrel and a two stage match trigger.

It is easily a sub MOA gun and will feed and cycle any ammo I feed it. the damned thing even cycles Flat Point bullets without any hiccups.

Back when I got my DPMS LAR-308, there was both the DPMS and the RRA LAR-8 at my gun pimp's, and me and a bud rolled in at exactly the same time, so we flipped a coin, and I got the DPMS. Out of the box, the RRA has a better trigger, no doubt, but the RRA uses FAL mags, and they are both heavy and can be expensive and sporadic in supply. The DPMS has some great MAGPUL mags for it, in capacities less than 20 and now one @ 25 rounds! The DPMS also came with a free-floated barrel. I have to say I REALLY love mine, though I dispensed with the goofy collapsible stock and put an ACE on it. I think I am going to go away from the ACE and to a MAGPUL fixed though. The guy that got the RRA & I have shot ours side by side, and I can personally tell no difference. I will say that not all uppers fot the RRA, so if you wanted a different caliber, then you will have issues to deal with (I am thinking i may got a 338 fed one day)

Anyhow, that is my .02, and as you can see, shot this one running/offhand @ 40 yds, with the leupold set on 3.5X:

this admittedly too small doe was taken the last day of the season, on a windy rainy day, shot with elbows on knees @ a (later) measured 230yds:

16 inches is all you need for a semiauto 308. It's better in a treestand. Semiauto rigs get heavy quickly when you start trying to make them into sniper rifles. Get the 16 inch, put a 2.5-10 on it and start killing hogs and deer.

I personally don't think an 18 inch would be near as much blast to your ears as a 16 inch.

It isn't, I whacked the barrel on a Savage Scout to 17, the muzzle blast/fireball was fairly intense. Haven't shot the SCAR at night yet. I really don't sweat it 'cause I ain't huntin' without a Game Ear anyway. I really need to hang on to what hearing I have.
