Just had an interesting conversation with a friend in SC. She recently moved there and has her two children enrolled in a public elementary school.
Said that she hadn't been receiving any art projects, etc and asked about them at a routine fall parent-teacher conference.
Apparently, the school keeps the kids' artwork and will 'sell' it back to the parents as a fundraiser to support their arts program?? I was speechless. Does this go on elsewhere too?
If the parents don't buy it, it either gets destroyed or displayed in other buildings in the district.

In loco parentis. The school is your kid's parent while your kid is in the school's custody. Therefore, the artwork your kid produces while under the school's supervision belongs to the school.

No. But then again, we donate most of the materials at the beginning of each year. So in a way, yes.

I can't even imagine how I would have responded. "Stupid [bleep] liberal" would be a start.

Stealing one said property and selling it back to them. Would make an interesting court case.

Not sure how it would be received, but it would be funny. I just shake me head every time I hear stuff like this. The inmates are truly running the asylum.

Tax levies aren't doing well, so they are looking for revenue anywhere they can get it. Unlike property tax, you don't have to buy the art.

Schools are largely funded by property taxes.
The bill has been paid already.
The auction of kids' artwork is a liberal brainstorm of which is a prime example for home schooling.

Sounds like one of those cutesy ideas by modern "educators" that live in their own bubble. If they think it's a fun way for parents to contribute to buying art supplies then it must be universally true. Anyone who thinks it's obnoxious is just not sufficiently advanced in their thinking. After all, teachers are trained professional educators and know what's best for the children.

I have a difficult time just accepting this at face value. Like so many things posted, sounds like some pertinent details have been left out perhaps.
But if it's true, some parents should pool their resources and file a big fat lawsuit claiming theft of intellectual property.
