Check in here on occasion to drool but now I have a question I am sure you guys can help with. I have a 1950 99 in 300 savage that was my grand fathers and I started hunting with about 30 years ago. My dad had a gun smith drill and tap it at that time for a scope and that is how I used it until it went into the safe and I moved on to a bolt gun. Well the other night I pulled the scope and bases and decided I wanted to hunt with the gun on occasion with a tang peep sight. Scope just didn't look right on that gun.
Question is should I just order the Marbles #009840 or is there a reason to hold out for a Lyman that may be original equipment. If so which Lyman. I did see 1 on ebay the other day and it was approximately same cost as the Marbles and I have seen them posted here too at times. I want this to hunt for shots less than 100 yards hopefully more like 50.

Thank you!

The older sights are much better quality than the current Marbles, imho.

So you are saying purchase something from ebay, or here, or a show rather than new.

I didn't see a 57A on Lyman's website so I assume that is an old model. Will have to look out for 1.

Yep, ebay/gunbroker/here. I had one of those new Marbles on a rifle I bought, it got mounted on the next gun I sold.

Might run an extra $50 for an older one in nice shape, but it's worth it. Nothing wrong with a nice Lyman or Marbles tang sight on an EG either, get whichever you like the looks of best.

If you are looking to keep the cost down the Williams will get the job done. The older ones use the tang holes for mounting and the newer ones use the scope mount holes.

The Williams is not as classy as the Lyman or Redfield but works the same.

Or, do you really want a peep that sets back on the tang as you first inquired?

Thanks a lot. I did see a Redfield L on ebay that looks in good condition. Maybe will have to bid. Did see the seller only had 2 Sales to date which usually scares me. Means he is new or got kicked off and signed up under new name.

As a note on the Redfields, you definitely do NOT want the Redfields that require 2 holes to be drilled on the side of the receiver.

VINTAGE & VERY NICE REDFIELD "L" RECEIVER SIGHT FOR SAVAGE 99 RIFLES

Thanks guys. This was the 1 I saw on ebay but after your info I see it says receiver sight. If my gun was indeed tapped for scope isn't there a possibility the holes would not be of the correct spacing for a receiver sight?

I think I want a tang peep. I will keep an eye out for 1.

So for an old Lyman what is a good price for a complete unit with little or no rust?

$125 is about right I think. Some of the guys here usually have one they'd sell you. At least they've been good to me when I was looking for sights.

I have a Redfield 70 I would sell. Think I have the mounting screws too.

$125 shipped

I have a Lyman 57SB that will fit the scope mount holes. It came off a 1952 Savage 99 in 300 Savage that I own. PM if interested.

Since his rifle was aftermarket drilled and tapped there's no guarantee that your sight will be in the correct position once mounted. Aftermarket holes are all over the place. Not trying to "dis" you but he's better off getting a sight that fits the tang holes. What he really needs is a Lyman 57SA or a Redfield 70LH. They're both receiver sights that fit the tang holes.

Ok got my tang sight. Trying to remove rear sight. I am going to order some brass punches. Tried a few love taps with a regular tap but no dice.

So is the best way put in vise, little oil, tap left to right?

Penetrating oil and left to right as you look forward towards the muzzle to remove.

Well had to buy a vise and brass punch set. Just oil did not work. Ended up cutting a slit in the top and came right out. Hated to ruin the rear sight.

1 last problem. It was tapped for scope. Is there a common size screw to fill in the holes. I have the base screws but they stick up 3/16 or so above receiver. I was going to try the tang screws I removed to mount the peep sight.
