I've got a friend who says he wants a .260 Rem chambered AR and has asked me to help him out. I know little about ARs in general and even less about AR10s. I believe you need an AR10 sized receiver (upper and lower?) for the .260 but wasn't sure. Am I correct? If a guy wanted to buy or put together a .260, are there certain manufacturers that you would recommend? It is my impression that everyone's AR10s are different and not interchangeable like the AR15, so I would think buying from the right manufacturer in this instance would be critical. Please feel free to offer up any other points to consider since I can use all the help I can get.

You are correct on the receiver size. He will need a AR-10 or DPMS/SR-25 style .308 receiver set.
I would recommend him going with a 6.5 Creedmoor though as it is a shorter round with almost identical ballistics to the .260. It will give him more options for shooting the longer match and hunting bullets. Hornady also makes excellent factory ammo for the 6.5 Creedmoor. This ammo works in standard .308 magazines also. Its everything the .260 is but a little shorter and Hornady match brass.

+1 Creedmore
Have him look at that a little more for the AR platform before he commits.

I'm going to stick up for the 260 here. It's a great caliber, based on the 308 and has the same selection of bullets as the Creedmore, if one is a handloader.
I must admit to never having owned a Creedmore but do currently own multiple 260's and believe in them as game cartridges.

oh the 260 is a fantastic round. Lapua must think so. It is a direct competitor to their 6.5 x 47 but they produce brass for the 260 also. That says something.
I was just talking AR platform.

Yep. The .260 is awesome, I love mine. But, once you start loading for it or even buying some factory ammo, it just is a little too long for the .308 AR platform. Thats why I recommended the 6.5 Creedmoor.

The 260 and 308 have the same OAL. They both load fine to 2.80.

Sure, you can load the .260 to 2.80 but for most of the longer match bullets you need to seat them out farther. That is assuming you want the best performance from your .260.

I have a custom .260 AR I've been meaning to put up for sale. Shoots GREAT (stacks 123 AMAX and is SUB MOA with 139 Scenars) I just never use it. Feel free to give me a shout if interested.

I load the 140 Amax without a problem in the 260.

Here's mine. 24" Krieger barrel, PRS stock, JP float tube, Geisselle DMR trigger, DPMS upper and lower, Luepold MK 4. .260 has better trajectory than a .308. Easy to keep it supersonic passed 1000 yards. Good selection of bullets for tactical, target or hunting. Not as good as .308, but more than sufficient. Fast Ed
