I'm new to reloading and wonder if I can load the .270 to fit right in with the 6.5x55 or 7x57 for woods hunting. I'd use a 150 grain bullet and aim for say 2650 fps.

What powders would I use, and what bullets would be most appropriate for deer at that velocity? Thinking H4895 and regular cup and core 150s...?

Any correction, perspective or advice is very welcome. Need to learn.

A few roads would get you there but the one you described is the one I'd take first... and last most likely.

I don't know about that. Not sure the .270 can reach that high. laugh

Save your 4895 for the lighter bullets.

H4831 is the goto powder for 150gr bullets in the .270 Winchester.

Match is with a standard primer, such as the CCI 200.

The typical book starting load should put you about where you want to be.

I do that at times... even each rifle is an entity unto their own, I've found that using 6.5 x 55 data with a 140 grain bullet with powders like IMR 4895 or 4064, loaded into a 270 with similar bullet weight, gives similar MV or at least close enough to fine tune it with the assistance of a chronograph...

or a 7 x 57's data with similar bullet weight using those powders or those like RL 15 or Varget in a 270....

a 140 grain bullet is the most common hunting bullet I load in a 270 for my own use... usually a Ballistic Tip..

a chrony is your friend...

I use H-4895 to turn my 30-06 into a 300 Savage or even a 30-30. Works great on the Missouri Whitetails.

I worked up just such a load with a 150g Hornady.

48g of Ar2209 (H4350) gave me 2675fps from a 23.5 inch barrel. Generally gave less than 0.75 inch 3 shot groups at 100y, usually with at least 2 shots touching.

Very mild to shoot.
