I can't get this thing to shoot and for the life of me I don't know why.
It throws shots in area the size of a pie plate at least and there is no rhyme or reason.
I've cleaned it, shot different ammo, changed scopes, prayed for it, and almost threw it in the creek.
So, any other suggestions other than something ridiculous like glass bedding the dang thing?
And I can't imagine the bore is shot out of it. Is that even possible?

What ammo are you using and what does the bore look like? What distance are you shooting? What scope are you using? If so, the optics may be faulty...

Get a good bore light and check the bore for lead. I shot some old Remington Thunderbolts in a rifle I had years ago and it did exactly like what your's is doing. I also had this problem with a Ruger MKII shooting Federal Lightening.

Might pose this question over at rimfirecentral.com
Several of those guys have intimate knowledge of the 'floating chamber' of the 550-1

Fellow over at RFC in the Remington Forum. Rsv1mos is probably the go to man on the 550-1

Sorry for the late reply, I've been out of pocket hauling elk hunters up the mountain.
I'm shooting CCI Mini Mag 40 and Velocitors, and Remington Thunderbolts.
Changed the optics and I'm getting the same issues. I'm shooting 50 and 100 yards and at 50 the only difference is that the variance is a little less, that's it. I looked at the bore and it looks fine, but I'm not a gunsmith so there could be wear and variance that could be causing this that I just don't recognize.
I just can't imagine that the bore is shot out of it though. And I cleaned the heck out of it and it shot the exact same.
I'm literally clueless on this.
Thanks for the lead Burt. I've never been on either of those forums. Floating chamber? Is that like the recoil chamber? I've pulled this thing apart twice but I'm scared to drop the sear because I read somewhere that it's a bear to put back in.

I believe.....and anyone correct me if I am wrong, but the 'floating chamber' is what allowed the 550-1 to more accurately function interchangeably with shorts, longs and long rifle cartridges. I am sure that rsv1mos over at RFC has waaaaaayyyy more knowledge on the subject than I. Drop in over there in the Remington forum and prepare to learn. Burt2506

I got a 1952 550-1 and it shoots very well. I got it 3 years ago from a really old guy that got it new at age 17. He sold me both of his 22s, that and a 1947 Rem 511 bolt action.
