.257 Roberts, (one) 110 Accubond, 386 yards, staggared two steps and fell over dead. The No.1 will do it's part if I do mine.

i have only shot one of the 3 dad owned. it was a 7 mag. it shot about a 4-5" group at 100 yards with Core Lokts, and i killed several deer with that rifle.
we bought some Federal Premium hoping it would work. it shot about a 7" group with that ammo. dad was a little disappointed. i was just getting into reloading and had hoped to get to play with it some. dad called me up one day and asked if i would help him sell it, because he had found something else he wanted. so i did. called up a buddy that i knew liked the rifles, and he took it. he called me a couple weeks later to inform me that he had found a load it liked and it was shooting a 1" group for him. i was glad it was just a picky eater...
the Ruger single shots are my favorite of the single shot rifles. i, too, want a big bore to play with in either style rifle, but i think i would enjoy the straight stock of the #3 over the curved stock of the 1, altho i have never seen pretty factory wood on a 3, and have never seen ugly wood on a 1.

John, What made you epoxy bed your AH? I have an AH also and while it shoots ok, it's no match for my 1B or 1A.

Free Float that barrel. Spacers and O-rings brought my 2nd and third shots, from the moon down to sub MOA.

3 shot group with my #1H in 405 Winchester. 300 grain Hornady FP with a stiff charge of Benchmark. Not a benchrest rifle, for sure, but a definite hunting rifle with plenty of accuracy. It's the way it came out of the box.

I've tried Varget and H4895 as well as well as IMR3031. The Benchmark held the edge in accuracy for me.

Shot a 1" group @ 200 yards with my 1B Standard in 22-250. The low power 1970's Redfield 2-7 was also a "disadvantage" according to a guy at the range. Good thing I have a nice trigger and some work done on the forearm.

Oh well Ruger is still making and selling #1s after 45 years. How many other models and even makers have disappeared in that time? They must be satisfying someone.

One of the most entertaining threads I've seen on this site ! Elated to see so many enthusiastic # 1 Owners/Users in one place .I won't go into detail on how many I've owned since they were released in October,1966,but I have had the pleasure of possessing nearly every variation and caliber ever made . In all these years , I can recall only one that did not perform admirably . That one (no pun intended)was a 7MM Rem Mag /S22L / With the Semi-BT Forend . 5" groups and It would blow your ears off !! I've had/have 300's that were more pleasant to shoot .Never relieved the obvious pressure on the forend , as I didn't intend to hunt with it and it went to a fellow collector long ago. My affliction with the Rifles began with the first Photos that I saw , and although waning some over the past 47 years ,a fire still burns in my heart for one of the true loves in my life . I still have a few specimens ,but like ladies of the night , are lonesome and longing for new hands to fondle them . Anyone interested in private discussion can PM me on here. btw I'm , for the most part ,a non-prefix kinda guy ,If It wasn't made before May of 68 I don't get excited !

I've yet to own a No.1 that wouldn't shoot 1.25" or less. It mattered not if it was a 45-70; 30-06; .223; 1A; 1B.....etc

Today's hunt... through the wing butts at 120 yards, DRT, and no damage to the breast meat. Same load as fired the original group.

Shot this yesterday with my redpad 270 testing Barnes 130 grain and 140 grain TSX bullets. The bottom row is the 130 grainers with varying charges of H4350.

My wife's 25-06 shoots just above MOA with the only ammo I've really tried in it (Superformance 117 SST) but it always shoots the first shot perfectly 1.5" high @ 100 yds so for a hunting gun any subsequent shots are likely a non factor.

Ruger at the time that red pad was made told their #1 customers that 3-4 MOA was acceptable accuracy and that their #1s were hunting -- not target -- rifles. (That unsubtle, go to hell, approach has changed in recent years as customers insist on higher quality work for rifles with MSRPs rapidly approaching $1500). They still have that attitude. In 2011 I bought one of the #1-A's in 257 Roberts. Gun had a visible burr at the muzzle and would shoot patterns. Sent back to Ruger, came back as barrel replaced. Still had the burr in the barrel and still shot patterns. Emailed the CEO on the website, he had customer service call and they had the rifle shipped back. Came back the second time, with the same barrel burr at the muzzle. They put a test target in with it, showed a nice 2 inch group. The problem was, it was shot at 50 yards. I called them back and was told that the gun exhibited acceptable accuracy and they were done dealing with the matter. I had a Liberty 22-250 that shot great, and wont dispute the fact that they can shoot good. Just that their attitude in regard to accuracy hasn't changed all that much. I do like #1's, I just don't see my self ever buying another new one again.

My sample of one, on a 2012 elk hunt. It was good for about 3.5 moa as purchased new. I tweaked it and fiddled, and free floated the for-end over the course of a year or so and managed to make it shoot 2 moa. I finally broke down and purchased the Hick's Accurizer. I quickly had the rifle shooting sub moa groups, and occasionally I find a load which will do this. It has killed a nice five by five bull for me in 2011 and again in 2012. Each was close to 400 yds. I think I will hang on to it until one of my grandsons is big enough and tough enough to handle it.
