please excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of the black tape around the muzzle of the stainless barrels? Keeps the air warm in the barrel

please excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of the black tape around the muzzle of the stainless barrels? Keeps moisture and debris out of the spout and to some degree crown protection!

Crappy cell phone pic, but the rifle is a first model Newton chambered in 256 Newton. Couldn't find a bull to try it out on, but I have no doubt a 140gr partition will do the trick.

The top rifle is a 9.3X62 in a 1908 Brazilian Mauser The bottom is a .375 Ruger in an FN action. Both bulls were shot in NE British Columbia.

No, I'm not a Ruger bigot - just an unabashed fan of their revolvers, M77's and #1's.
A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

I hear blue is suppose to be better than black.... While black will keep wet and dirt out of the barrel, blue does so as well but with the following advantages: 1. Adds 250fps or more to muzzle velocity. 2. Guarantees .5 MOA accuracy or better 3. Makes the hunter invisible to game Blue tape - don't leave home without it!
