A few years back, I was faced with the same decision. I went 7mm-08 because I had a 270 and didn't want to deal with a potential mixup of 2 very similar cases. Second guessed that decision many times "Did I make the right choice?"

I have and love a 25-06 Sako 75. I would rather it be a 7-08, just for a short action. Thinking of moving it down the road after season to start looking for a 7-08 montana. My wife has confiscated my .243 Stainless Classic. It is to perty anyway.

For deer, I'm a huge fan of the 25-06. 117 gr Sierra GK or 120 gr Fusion, more DRT kills than I care to brag about! Doesn't get any better.
But it's also an awesome varmint cartridge, if you do any of that.

You "can" do both. Never say "can't"

270.
Will cover the same ground as a 7mm-08 and 25-06 in one rifle. Light bullets fast, or heavy bullets, or high bc, or good factory ammo.

25-06 is more "overbore" than the 7-08. So if you like to shoot often you might "burn out" the barrel on the 25-06 quicker than the barrel on the 7-08. If I was looking at 25 cal. i'd look at the 257 bob...JMO.

I'm more a short action guy, so I'd go with the 7mm-08.

lots of good replies about caliber, and agree that out to 300 yards it is a complete wash. They are effectively the same. Where you will notice a difference in those two is in the rifle itself. The mountain rifle is a very cool, very trim little rifle...but under a load of adrenaline I have found it harder to shoot it well. Similar to the reason those trap and skeet guys like long 32 inch barrels on their Over/Unders. The mountain rifle can be a little "whippy" in my personal experience with them.

From your choices 7mm-08, but the rifle is more important.
I prefer the 270 idea myself.
