someone told me of a touch-up chemical and for the life of me I cannot remember what it is. Any help! A few scratches on a BLR that I want to sell.

It will actually work through a light coat of oil, but I have found if you clean the metal with a degreaser and then warm it with a hair dryer it will work better and faster.

I usually rub it in with 0000 steel wool, let it work for a minute or so and then buff it off with a paper towel. After repeating 4 or 5 times I then spray a heavy coat of penetrating oil, (Wd 40 will work) and let it cure for 24 hours. If it is not dark enough at that point, I repeat the whole process till it is.

Good luck,
Weagle.

tbjohn, Weagle pretty much nailed it for OxphoBlue use.
One thing to remember:
Put some OxphoBlue in a smaller squeeze bottle rather than dipping the applicator in the bottle and contaminating it.

I have used both a heat gun and or near boiling water to heat the metal just prior to application.
I cut a 0000 pad of steel wool into one inch squares and use them for the application, putting the Oxpho on the steel wool and immediately soft-stroking it onto the gunmetal surface.
Oxpho Blue works almost immediately so no point in letting it sit waiting for something else to happen..Re apply until the evnness and color you want is attained.
No need to rinse as unlike some other blueing(corrosove) agents, it doesn't keep working.
A light coat of gun oil over all with a piece of cotton cloth and you're done.
Pretty amazing stuff and gives a surprisingly durable and pleasing job..Jim

tbjohn,
Oxpho Blue is good stuff..and not just for firearms.
Carbon steel knives, axes, hatchets, blades for woodworking planes, drawknives, pruning shears, saws of every type, broadheads for archery hunting, tools that stay in the truck all year..

.As long as it's steel with a decent carbon content, the cold blueing protection will really keep the rust down on lawn, garden and shop tools..
When I order it from Brownells every six-eight minths, I get a couple of quarts..which reminds me I need to get some more..:)...jim
