I'm close to 100k on my 99 and so far so good. I won't have it much longer. MPG, even with the 4 cylinder, isn't very acceptable.

we're probably gonna swap in a gm v-6 and auto tranny. adapter rig is supposed to be inexpensive and relatively easy to do. better mileage, more power, much sturdier. rock crawlers use autos. we might as well try - although it doesn't seem natural ...

Makes me feel lucky to only have a 4 speed in my CJ-7, no chance of blowing 5th out of my NP435 4 speed.
Any idea why these trannies lost 5th? Guessing lack of oil or wrong kind of oil. I know that many of the lite duty modern 5 speeds use ATF rather than gear oil.

I think that tranny NP435 came out in 1956,I know I had one in my '74 Dodge, and it had been around for a very long time then.As for the Wrangler POS tranny,it's from Peugoet(sp),the later Japanese 5-speed is a good one.I have almost 400,000KM on mine.
