As far as the two halves of the scope rings connecting to themselves, is there a difference in horizontal rings (ex. Burris, Leupold, etc.) and vertical rings (ex. Talley fixed rings)? Is one design better then the other?

If your are going to lap the rings, horizontal is way way easier.

I wasn't planning on lapping the rings. I was looking at the Burris Signature rings (which don't have to be lapped) and the Talley Fixed rings (which Talley recommends you don't lap). I was just wondering if one was stronger than the other; not the particular brand, but the design.

I don't have experience with Talley rings, so I cannot comment on them. But I have had outstanding experience with Burris Signature rings, plus the Pos-align inserts. No matter what the base is like, the Signature rings will not impart any bending moment to the scope tube, with no lapping. AFAIK, this is not true of any other type of ring. I doubt it makes a hill of beans difference whether the rings are split vertically or horizontally (more difference in who makes it and basic quality than that).

Have had Weaver, Millett, Burris, Redfields Jr. and Sr., Leupold, Talley detachables and fixed, probably some I'm forgetting - Andy said it right.
