I gave my old hunting and fishing suburban ('85 3/4T 4x4, manual trans, 350) to my old hunting buddy, my 25 year old daughter. She flew home for a couple of days, loaded up all the takeoff parts, extras, etc. plus a small part of her other stuff and headed out this morning. I gave her the old 270 she grew up hunting with a box of shells too. Watching her pull out of the driveway was like watching an old girlfriend walk down the street knowing it's probably the last time I'll see her. I put that old 'burban through hell and back and it never, left me afoot. My 85 year old dad said, "Good, now I don't have to worry about you getting hung up in the bottom of some old big coulee". I wonder how he knew that????

That's a memory worth having right there.

Burbs were good vehicles. I had an '86 that I took a lot of ugly places. It's only problem was that it had Chev's $%^&@# 700R4 transmission, the worst one they ever made. I had them in 3 different vehicles and all 3 had to be rebuilt at about 120k.

I had an '86 Chevy Suburban that was flawless. I bought it new and ran that wonderful truck for fourteen years and ended up trading it in on a 2000 Suburban that also proved to be flawless. Both rigs simply needed gas, oil, oil filters and occasional maintenance.

In 2010, I traded my 2000 Suburban in on a new 2010 Chevy Crew cab 1500 Z-71 in the LTZ grade. I've run the 1500 for three years now and it has yet to give me even a little bit of trouble.

Goodness knows how many hundreds of thousands of miles I've put on these three trucks in the last twenty-seven years ... and not a lick of problems. Dang, Chevy makes great trucks.

If my daughters have any interest in either a .270 or driving a rig like that, I'll know I raised 'em right! They're just toddlers now, so I've still got a lot of work to do!

She sounds like a very special young lady and you sound like a very proud father who did an excellent job of raising her.
Congratulations to both of you.

I'd like to get a 3/4 ton 'burb someday... but I'd want to do the Higbean treatment to it... Swap in a 12v 5.9 Cummins. Cutout fender flares, a mild lift, 37"ish tires, Detroit Locker in the rear, ARB or Ox Locker in the front, Air Ride seats (my back ain't getting younger!), big nasty front bumper, 12,000 or 15,000 lb. Warn winch.

Of course, it'll have to be a GMC, 'cause I hate Chevys...

Sounds like a bittersweet day, but I looks as if you raised her right.

I've started that process with mine ('91 GMC 3/4 ton diesel). it now has 14 bolt full floater w/Detroit locker rear and Dana 60 with Detroit locker in the front. the 5.9 Cummins swap is the plan...

That's a great picture. The suburban looks right at home in the mountains on a two track!

One question: how the front Detroit Locker in the snow/ice?

snow is not a problem, but they are a little twitchy on ice. I do not use 4x4 at highway speeds though. never have.

one day I may swap the front to an ARB, but the 5.9 Cummins comes first.

There is a reason the suburban is the longest continues running vehicle model in history. Started in 1933
