Just today... a few hours ago, I called my eldest Grandson (age 22) and told him my Model 99 (EG) in .300 Savage caliber is now
HIS rifle since I won't be doing any deer hunting anymore... just as I promised him a good many years ago when he was just a little tyke.
However, there was a caveat attached to the "gift"... he has to come to my house on many different occasions and learn all the "secrets" I know about hand-loading his own ammo. Then, when I'm "gone", he will inherit all my reloading tools and supplies as well. His Dad and his Uncle will inherit the rest of my firearms, but the Model 99 is his alone.
He was really excited and quite readily agreed to this stipulation and said that he is anxious to learn what I know about "accuracy secrets" and general hand-loading. He loves to hunt, but his "best" rifle is an old 8mm military Mauser carbine.
Now he will have a fine rifle to use in the woods or field. I'll keep the rifle in my safe until he gets a gun-safe of his own, but the Model 99 will be available to him whenever he wants it.
For now, I'm keeping it because of all the wonderful memories that rifle has for me. But he can come and get it any time he wants to use it at the gun club or on a hunt.
I'm looking forward to our "get-togethers"... he's a fine, decent lad of high character and it makes me feel good to know he'll have it and use it with honor and ethics just as his Dad (my son) has taught him by example.
Strength & Honor...
