Anyone have experience with the 300 WSM loaded to 30-06 or 308 Win velocities?
I've longed liked the '06 over the 308 because I have no trouble getting good accuracy in my '06 loaded to 308 levels for hunting smaller big game animals at closer ranges where I don't want/need the extra velocity. If you could do likewise with the WSM, I'm thinking it would be the premier "good for nearly any situation" hunting rifle.

Thanks in advance for sharing your experiences.

If you've got a good 06 or 308 you really don't need a 300 WSM.

The three different 300WSM's that I've loaded for all shot best at 'max charges'.

Less velocity and accuracy wasn't as good.

I'd say just the opposite. If you have a good 300 wsm, you for damn sure don't need a 30-06 or 308w or 300WM for that matter. I usually load mine (300 wsm) on the hot side. Sorry to the OP since I've never tried to load it down blush...Well let me take that back. I used to load my Hornady 165gr. btsp interlocks @ 2,850 fps. It was pretty mild mannered and really accurate:

Not sure about the wsm version but my 300 win mag shoots 150 gr sierras at 2600 fps into a ragged hole at 100 yards with sr4759. It is a great load for eastern whitetails. With Barnes at max loads it works well for elk too.

In almost every single instance I have found the most consistent and accurate loads at lower velocities. What you are thinking is in reality a trick that is often used by many of the wise old-timers who seem to always get match grade type accuracy from a regular old hunting rifle.

Unfortunately you will get posts here on the fire about a mile long telling you just how ignorant your step above neanderthal thinking is. .

I worked up a load for my 270 that pushes the 150 partition along at a meager 2600 fps. A Big Muley shot at almost 200 yds with this load was bled out in three quick bounds and crumpled up completely dead. I have noted in over 30 years of hunting that shot placement is far deadlier than any other tactic you'll likely employ. Last outing at the range this load produced 3 3 shot groups at 200 yds well under an inch.

The rifle is nothing special....no custom barrel just a plain old Zastava rifle with the factory barrel. I've seen these types of results with whether it be Winchester, Remington or a number of different brands. The one thing I have always done other than a rifle being right off the shelf or my one custom is a quality bedding of the action and float the barrel though I've seen a number of rifles that shot great without being bedded or floated.

Here shortly someone will be along to explain to you why you need a 338 win mag loaded to detonating velocities because they lost 7 or 8 animals in a row with it loaded to Max!!!

Exactly what I was thinking...Especially for the ranges the OP is talking. ....the 30/06 will kill big big game at 500+ yds.

Factory 24" tube here, but the Hornady interlocks just seemed to run slow. Now I run 180 gr. Nosler partitions in my extreme weather (different rifle) and they are pretty fast (3,050-3,100 fps) for the short mag.
