I thought of the 6.8 and its a good choice, the 5.56 and 308 do the same thing on medium game. I wanted a .308 AR as I could not rationalize going up just a bit in power. I keep thinking I still might wind up with a 6.8 upper someday as the 5.56 size platforms are much more nimble but then I pull the trigger sending a good 5.56 bullet on the way and stuff dies.

.....what I am looking for "Kill medium game such as deer, hog & coyotes out to the 200 to 300 yd line"
If that's your goal the 6.8 is fine. I have all three (and more) in ARs at the moment. The 16" .308 is my favorite, by far. With that said, there is a significant weight penalty with it. The 6.8 will do practically everything the .308 will do inside 300 yards or so. My favorite 6.8 has a 14.7" barrel pinned to 16". Lose a little velocity over the 18" barrel, but handles so nicely.

whats the purpose of chopping a barrel under 16 to only pin on a flash hider or such... never could get that in my head.
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

16" vs 16.7" or so depending on the FH used.
I'll never do a 14.5 barrel again.

I went 6.8. Very little recoil, not much more than 223. Leaves an awfully nice blood trail. Exit holes shown here. I double tapped this doe. First shot was tight behind shoulder, second was a little too far back but shattered the liver. We were amazed at all the blood around her. This pic is cleaned up a bit.

I've used 68forums for a couple of years. However, I find some of the load data scary, so be cautious. They also just love PRI magazines because you can load so much more powder behind a bullet loaded to 2.30" instead of 2.265"

Granted all my shots are under 100 yards, and admittedly the 5.56 does not leave a big exit but its terminal with one shot 6 animals so far with 62TSX and 75 grain Swift S2. 1 10 point deer, 1 160 or so pound pig, 2 shoates, 1 7 pt. deer. so far..I guess I could shoot twice just never do it.
like your float tube, what barrel length?

What is the best larger than a 5.56 that still utilizes the AR15 platform?? If you're talking deer sized game and smaller, the 6.8 is a hammer!
I should have just bought a [bleep] T3...
