#4-#6, whatever was on hand is what I've used.

No. 6's when the leaves are off the trees and no. 4's when there are a bunch of leaves early in the year.

JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Back in the 70's & 80's lots of my old dealers in Deep East Texas when I was running a SG Distr in Dallas always put together a truck load or 2 preseason order for me in 3" 12 guage 1 5/8oz #4's & #6's. Said 100'+ tall pine trees made tree rats hard to reach with enough pellets. Sure helped with my Remington price discount quota as a bonus buy. Sold couple 3-4 hundred S&W 1000 3" mags every year too 'cause they had a tighter Full choke than the Remy 1100's in those fixed choke days.
Today I've planned on using a "Turkey Full" choke down there, and will have to see what the Benelli will do on paper at 50-60 yards before the next trip.

I like hunting them with my Ruger 22 pistol but I will not point it up in the air at a squirrel in a tree. That bullet might just kill someone a mile away. These days I take my 20 ga SxS with 6 shot. Always wanted a 410 for squirrels but never got one. Might just have to change that.

I didn't care for #4s in the .410, felt like the pattern density just wasn't there, but I'd use in a heartbeat in my 20 gauge.

I don't presently own a 12 gauge.
