I have a sporterized 1903 that had pressure on the forend, it shot great that way.
When my lug screw broke one day, I decided to free float it since the old bedding material was brittle; still shoots great!
Unfortunately, I don't have a group to display... but here is today's shot.
I would think any bedding method would work if it is done properly.
Even when the bedding isn't proper, it can still shoot well.
That is 3 consecutive shots with the same sight setting about 2 inches apart, at 250 yards. I later found that the lug screw was very loose, making the POI 1 foot lower than usual, but still precise.

If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. If I don't reply further, I'm satisfied with my side of the "debate."
If I may, what exactly are you working with? What action, cartridge, barrel length, twist, etc. What components are you loading and what loads have you worked up thus far? What is the best group for this rifle?
