You guys know that ebay wont sell guns (they will sell porn though..... go figure). But a model 1899 barrel is up for bid. WHy are there always pipe wrench marks on TDs? DO you really feel the need to tighten them that much?

NYS,

they probably couldn't get it off so they went after it with a pipe wrench. It is very simple to get a stuck barrel loose without a barrel vise and without damaging the barrel. Guess they couldn't figure it out.

Well now for the other good news:

I noticed the front sight base doesn't look right then notice the length of the barrel, obviously somebody cut it off. Also it looks like it has some pretty good pitting going on there. The two holes could be welded up and finished when reblued but notice he doesn't mention whether the threads are interrupted and the big if is he doesn't mention the bore.

Hope these guys come around when I get ready to sell my 22 HP supplies.

The front sight is the early version and appears OK. Rear sight is wrong. Here is the pre-eBay statement that was posted by the seller:
I was getting ready to sell my extra barrel on e-bay.
Has interruped threads, still has sights on it , strong rifling, not much finish left on it. a couple of holes for target block midway down the barrel. It also has two extractor cuts. if interested my e-mail is

Thanks Rick
I didn't know if the sights were right. I've been wondering about the length. It is a little shorter 1/8 inch than my HP and the same length as my 30-30 TD. Pitting is not as bad as it looked in the pictures. just is very motled.

Elwood,

don't take this personally, but I am sure somebody will read this and then screw up a good 1899/99, so TRY AT YOUR OWN RISK!!!!

Take the forend off and put receiver upside down in a padded vise.

OPEN THE ACTION.

With a BRASS punch, gently tap sideways on the groove/slot at the base of the barrel and the barrel should come loose. Mine was stuck and I didn't want to break the foreend, so this is what I did. It is still very tight but at least now I can take it down to clean the bore. Make sure and grease the threads and the barrel and receiver faces before putting back together.

And only take it down when necessary, there are alot of loose barrels out there, but we can talk about that fix at a later time.
Seems like a reasonable fix...I have two 99s with barrels that refuse to come out with a normal amount of effort. Both of them shoot pretty good so I'm not in any hurry to remove the barrel but wanted to know a good method in case the urge hits.

Thanks

Rick,

Thanks for setting me straight, I read 257's original post but for some reason didn't make the connection - too many hours in front of the pc I guess.

257AI, Sorry guy, I didn't mean to rain on your auction. Actually now that I have my head screwed on straight thanks to Rick, it sounds like a good barrel for someone, if I needed one I definitely be in on it.

PS, you may want to add the information about the bore, the front sight being original and about the holes being welded up when refinished. Some bidders thrive on that kind of stuff and drive the price up.

One has to watch out, at various times Savage used TD barrels in solid frame rifles, maybe as replacements, maybe as originals, I don't know.
