I thought this was interesting.

Pretty neat but the can can stove is less complicated and works better then it has a right to. I use a potted meat can and make the poor cat stick to dried food.

These work pretty well and there are some excellent ones for sale on eBay, and cheap too. If you are seriously counting ounces, these are the way to go. For me, it is usually worth the extra weight to bring the Jet Boil. The Jet Boil is faster and easier, but that convenience adds some weight.

I've also found that you can put the flame from a bic lighter inside a pop can and make a really nice handwarmer in a pinch.

I use a mix and match of alcohol stove burner/windscreen/pot gear I got cheap on ebay. Tried making a couple, but the ebay ones work better. There are some creative machinists on there... Mine has never let me down, but can be a bit finicky to get going.

I used a Snow Peak canister stove this season but will be going back to the alcohol beer can stove. I don't like how the canister stove flame is so weak when the fuel gets low. It's really hard to bring just the right amount of fuel on a trip and I usually end up bringing a full spare if I'm using a partial can. I had a Jetboil (well the Primus version anyway...) and it was just too bulky for me. Plus I like my stainless mug for everything from boiling water to drinking my coffee to a splash of scotch before bed.

Stupid light...

Mine didn't burn like that. Only in the center, not through the little "chambers" on the outside. Maybe I need to adjust height the top portion is inserted in the bottom. Looks like you experimented with several setups.

I also used denatured alcohol which burns with an almost invisible flame.

That was denatured alcohol. I lit the center and it shot out the sides when it warmed up. It only took 5-10 seconds to warm up. Putting a pot on the top helps, as it creates pressure and forces the flames out the sides. I had to make the dents bigger than in the video, bot at the top and down the sides. The 'pleats' down the side were deep and there was a clear but small dent at the top near the curve.

All the stoves shown work. Two of them shoot a solid ring of flames around the edge and the rest work as shown. Use a straight knife to make the dents. Any curve in the knife and it was much harder to make the dents. I showed my 12 year old the video and we ended up making a bunch.

I realized after my last post that it needs to warm a little to work properly. I also went back and increased the indentation depth a little like you described. Works pretty good now.

You gotta let the alcohol "boil" before you put the pot on a Cat stove too.
