Bud's sells the Mountain SS for about $865 vs the M70 EW for about $100 more. Is the EW normally priced $100 higher than the Mountain SS? Is one a better grab? I like both.

I like the EW better. I have both in .30-06 and find my EW to be more accurate and less finicky. Probably because it has a heavier barrel than the MR. The EW is still a light rifle however.

Have you fondled an EW? To me, it was the worst feeling stock I have ever picked up. It felt like a 2x4 to me. No way I could ever hunt with that club - pistol grip was really thick. I've not handled the new Mountain rifle but the old ones were very nimble.

Have you held the .308 EW? Handle is nothing like the stock on the LA EW's.... I like the SA EW's quite a bit. Owned a .270 EW.. Very nice rifle..

I already have a 30-06 1993 Stainless M70 push feed in a new OD green B&C Medalist that is supposedly just like the EW stock.

I handled an EW when I was about ready to buy (big model 70 fan) and that stock killed all desire for that rifle. About as handy as a fencepost, for me. The desire was to not have to get an aftermarket stock. Then again, a mtn rifle stock fits me very well. Ended up with a 700SS Mtn rifle in 270 and have been satisfied with it.

I've not handled the new Mountain rifle but the old ones were very nimble. The stocks on both are made by B&C, dimensions are virtually the same. The 700 stock has no internal aluminum block. It keeps weight down, but makes for a very weak stock. The EW stock is 4 oz heavier, almost identical shape, but much stronger. I've had both BTW. Kept the EW in an Edge, problem solved. I'd have to put an Edge on the 700 if I went that way too.

I have a 308 in a EW and I elected not to restock it shoots great and the stocks seem thinner on them I had 270 and restocked it in Mickey but the 308 I am leaving alone
If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer or elk but how he hunted it.

the EW and the MR stocks are both made by B&C, but the dimensions are not 'virtually the same' the wrist and the forearm of the EW are chunkier, and the EW is flat around the bottom metal.

M70 by far. I am biased though as I own one in 30-06, the EDGE stock makes all the difference in the world.

I have a 700 mountain rifle ss in a 7mm-08 and love it, my go to rifle. although finicky to find a load it liked, it shoots consistent .6 groups with 4 shots and I do not let the barrel cool. I like the bell and Carlson stock and although not super light, it points like a dream and balances well....little luck involved however shot my buck 2 weeks ago at 175 yards running.(hit him in the a##, but broke his back!)
guns to me are like legal crack

Or, you could just buy a Tikka and it will shoot better than both of them and be lighter to boot.

Restocking a $900-1000 factory rifle with a $600 stock doesn't make a tremendous amount of sense to me, unless you have someone waiting to buy that takeoff stock for a high price. You'd be much better off getting a SS 700 Action, putting a aftermarket barrel that's twisted/throated to your specs, and then going Edge.
