Buddy wants to change his scope on his Ruger Tang Safety 338 Win Mag. Will a Vortex Viper 2 X 7 work? Or other suggestions?

I have a 2.5-8 Leupold on my MKII. seems to work, but I'd probably go with less magnification if I hadn't had that scope sitting in the safe...

I ran a Leupold 2.5-8X on my first one. There was zero room to move the scope front and back, however, this was a 1985 vintage scope with a 33, not 36, mm objective and perhaps a shorter tube ... maybe, maybe not, not sure.

The last two I ran a Leupold 3-9X on and had just a little bit of flexibility with the front to back positioning. I'd probably go with a 3.5-10X with the B&C 'hairs if cost isn't a roadblock.

I know nothing about hunting in Alaska, but I do know a little bit about hunting in places where certain residents may take a strong exception to one's presence. And where these interactions may occur at close range when least expected. And what I know from that is that you want a scope readily facilitates two eye open, instinctive shooting. That means I would want s bottom end magnification of 1.5 or less. 4 to 6x top end is going to suffice. A big objective is probably not going to be helpful. I'd be looking at a 1-4x24 compact with illuminated reticle.

Just gotta say that's damn nice!! Back to the question, I just run an Elite 4200 2.5-10x40 with firefly reticle and it works pretty good. It's on my elk rifle so it gets used pretty hard for a week out of the year whistle

Less than 2.5X? What you have is the ideal scope for about any big game rifle IMO/E. Also a fan of the 2-7X VXII. Here's one on my old Ruger RS Whelen.

If it were me, and if you can find one, I'd put a Conquest 3-9x40 on there.

I have a Xtra Vortex Viper 2 X 7 would like to know if it will fit.

Well I have a 2 X 7 Redfield Revolution on my Ruger 375 Alaskan, Redfield scope mount area just over 5.25". Gives me just 1/4" of room.

The Viper is just over 5.5" of mounting area so should work.

Any one have one on a Ruger LA? If so how do you like it?

I'll go contrarian and advise you to put on a Leupie 6x36 or Weaver 6x38. Tough as nails, nothing to adjust other than find your knife.

I have a tang safety M-77 .338 with a Leupold 2X7 and it's fine. It's been thru a lot of airports. I'm working on a Mod 70 375 and will probably put the same scope on it, maybe with LRD, maybe not.
