Yep, it's like an eight lane highway. I maintain that asking a hard jacketed bullet .004" undersize to bump up to seal the bore from the get-go is asking too much of it. Even should said bullet eventually bump up to groove diameter, by the time it does so the throat damage has been done. We forget just how hot those expanding gases are that impinge upon the base of a high velocity bullet. Think cutting torch hot, squirting past the bullet.

I've said before that if all one does is shoot a few shots per year, go ahead and use .224" bullets. The damage will be slow to materialize- your heirs will have to deal with it, not you. Otherwise, use proper size bullets to preserve as much of that 100 year old steel as possible. Savage ain't making .22HP barrels anymore.

makes sense... would be a post war replacement barrel. Seen several over the years. Steve, 1899Sav, sold one not too long.

Congrats to you and your son! Nice buck and that's a good size dog. I owned one of those rifles,a prewar EG,in new condition til about 1975, it went to Buffalo Ny. Hmmn been wonderin' about that fella/gun
