Arrested 16 protesters, too! Apparently they didn't think that John Day had any jail space, but it's got a regional jail. The had to spend 36 hours in the pokey.

Police arrest 16 as protesters delay tar-sands megaload near John Day

I'm sure they rode their bikes to John Day for the protest.

Exactly. What is amazing is gasoline is available at a lower cost per ounce than bottled water, in spite of such capital outlays.

I still don't understand the reasoning for running those down our remote byways. Put them on the interstate and have them in the next state in a day.

And I can have issues with my long box crew cab and a 16 ft wood trailer in the forest.

Not sure either but I'm guessing that there were height clearance issues on 84.

They just tried moving a number of 175' long concrete bridge girders down I-5 on Tuesday. They dumped one at MP 102 (just south of Myrtle Creek). They had to close the freeway for over 6 hours. Not a lot of good options to bypass I-5 in this part of the state.

It's coming across so. Idaho before long. We don't have many options here, either. In some places, it's I84 or nothing, at least as far as Twin Falls. Then it's supposed to go north on US93 toward MT.

The company says that it takes 2 trucks to push the load from the back and one truck to pull from the front. The entire length from front to back is more than the size of a football field according to the movers. They says that the load has a total of 27 axles and the height is 19 feet. They are taking side highways and haven't been able to get on Interstate 84 too much because they say they won't fit under overpasses.

For oil sands processing. Therefore inherently evil. The Bicycle Class in Portland thus hates it.

The police used pain compliance on the protestors, perfect. I would have paid to watch.

30 years ago loggers would have used a different level of pain compliance on the protestors.

Yes. I guess it's big business just mapping routes for those loads. I've talked with some of those folks moving industrial goods and large yachts, and they are often tracked by competiting companies looking to score least effort routes.

Got stuck behind a big transport on I15 last
Sunday morning early: 30 miles at 10 mph is not fun. That one had two tractor in front and one in back.

I believe that if they want to delay the load, they need to pay for the time and equipment costs. By the hour.

They have the right to their opinion, but when it cost the mover to delay, they should pay.

Right is right.

Steve, thanks for posting. That's been the talk of the town I grew up in ever since the word got out they were considering routing through JD. Breaking news for the Eagle was where the load was parked at as it approached the town.

It's almost to the Idaho border, possibly there now as it moves at night. This was in our paper this morning:
Quote
As of Thursday, the Idaho Transportation Department had not issued the permits for the load.
What if the ITD decides to not issue the permit?
