Which scopes do fit well with low rings on a Remington 700 long action? On the pic (a dull one!) an old Weaver K-4 is mounted quite nicely, but that one is a retroaged leaky scope. I want a good new to put there. I am thinking about a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36, but do you have other suggestions? Grateful for your inputs! Pete

Any of the 36, 40, or 42mm objective Leupold's should work just fine regarding "fit". I've used them all with Talley lows.

Leverpete, What you're thinking about- VX3 2.5-8X36- Is exactly what I would have suggested. You can get one of those in the Talley ex-lows easily. If you have to employ the 1/4 or 1/2 offset on the front ring to get it back far enough for a good sight picture, you may have to go with the regular lows. Don't know if they offer the ex-lows with the extension.

I think your choice would be excellent. A straight Leuy 4x wouldn't be no bad choice.
Aim for the exit hole.

My 700 LA has Talley extended lows with a 2-7x33 VX2 and it fits me nicely. Extended lows and a 2.5-8x36 would be a fantasic setup
When I die I hope I don't start voting democrat.

My LA 700 has worn both a 3.5-10x40 and a 6x42 in Talley LW lows. No issues with mounting or eye relief with either scope.
As Bearcat mentioned, I wonder if you might want extended lows to get the eye relief for a 2.5-8x36? I don't know, as I haven't tried. From pics I've seen of the 2.5-8x36 on a long action, it doesn't look like there's much room to move the scope back or forward.

Here is a pic of the rifle with an Leupold VX-1 2-7x33 mounted in medium Weaver rings. The front base is an extended one. With a longer tube, it could have used low rings. With lowest Weaverrings, the power ring and front bell rest on the bases. 5 inches are needed between power ring and bell to allow a lower mount with these bell diameters. I will take a look at the Talley rings. But I also want to find a good scope less than 40 mm that can be mounted low, as I need better rest for the cheek. Pete

2-7x33, talley extended lows is what I am running on my LA. For me, it isn't a perfect fit. Once the power gets in the 5x range, I have to start creeping. At 7x, forget about it. I am going to swap it out to a 4x33 this winter.

It all ended up with a VX-2 3-9x40 heavy duplex. The tube is long enough to allow a low mounting.
Later I will get a little 1-4x20 for woods hunting at close range.
Thanks for your inputs!

I really like Vortex. The Vortex Viper 3-9x40 is about $299 @ Camera Land NY . That's about $100 less then the VX-3 2.5-8x36. I classify the Viper series closer to the Mark 4 MR/T series.
Remember, not everyone has a happy ending, so be happy when you can
