How did I miss they came out with a mini? I bought the bigger one prior to the season but still find myself eyeballing the mini.

I picked one up a while back, but haven't really used it yet. Much smaller than the regular squeeze.

At 2 oz and 20$, are there any negatives to this filter? Seems like a good way to go.

Kind of what I was thinking as well. Sent a couple as Christmas gifts to some friends in Montucky. I have a feeling at least one of them won't hold back on his opinions! Lol

Just conjecture, but with a smaller surface area on the filter I'd think they would have to be more susceptible to clogging than a larger filter with the same throughput. Not a big deal witha backwashable filter other than carrying the syringe for backwashing. And at that price and weight, you could bring an extra!

I'll definitely be trying one out.

It does come with a big syringe for backflushing. I picked one up about 3 montys ago because my wife wanted one.

I think they failed in that they should've made the syringe big enough for the filter to neslte IN IT to minimize packed volume. As it is, it looks like it should fit in there but it does not and you are left scratching your head because the syringe is so much bigger than the little filter.

And since the syringe is made to backflush contaminents out of the filter with CLEAN WATER- WHY contaminate the inside of the syringe with what's on the OUTSIDE of the filter each time you pack it up? I think Sawyer knew what they were doing.

The Mini is a pretty darn good little filter. If someone is concerned with packed volume, get a filtering straw and be done with it.

Don't forget to put it in your fartsack at night. One freeze and it is trashed.

just rinse it with clean water before you pack it - the same clean water that's in the syringe that you used to back flush it

You'd fart on your water filter? That's just gross.

We used 4 of them inline as a part of our gravity filters in October.
Was filtering water for teams of 13 & 16 men for 4 days using two filters per team.
They worked just fine.
They are a little slower than the larger 3-In-1 filter but for a total weight of under 7oz. for 10L waterproof bag, tubing, filter , etc they are well worth it.
I got one in my Christmas stocking for my EDC bag and will have another one in my car.
For $20 that's cheap insurance.

Where would the plunger on the syringe go?

Looks like the hollow rod technology has been perfected, finally. This appears to have come a long way from MSR's ill-fated "Hyperclog" contraption.

That syringe backflush looks like the ticket. On a long hike with multiple resupplies, you could put that syringe in your bump box that you mailed ahead to yourself.
