12 pound channel cat on a rod and reel. Lake Amon Carter. Stinky cheese bait over a baited hole. The night before I caught 14 from five to eight pounds in the same hole.

Biggest that got away. I never turned him around. Hooked up with him under a bridge on the Red River. (The baby mud martins were falling out of the nests into the water.) He went down the river, striped the gears out of a good Garcia 5000, and took off all my line before breaking off. I should have cut the line and saved the reel.

Biggest on ultra light. 6 pound flathead cat on 4 pound line with ultra light spinning tackle. He took a liking to my crappie jig. It took a while to get him to the net. I released him unharmed into a nice farm pond that had plenty of blue gills for him to feast on.

The only thing more fun than catching catfish is eating them. PDS

Well I have never caught a catfish, but i have caught dog fish... I also boated a 143 pound halibut. but never a cat fish. I do have a rod rigged with a wiffle ball I throw for my cats one of them weighs nearly twenty pounds...does that count?

21 pounds, caught while trolling for walleyes on a dinky cheap wal-mart combo setup. Still have the rod, the reel wasn't up to the task. I let the old fish swim around in the marina bait tank to recuperate. The owner decided it was time to release the cat when it started taking the minnows. Taken on a SE Nebraska mudhole lake while dodging jet skies.

That's a good un... I'm glad to know there are others who let the flatheads live. I love to eat the channels and the blues but the flatheads take a long time to grow and they do so much good for a body of watter, it seams a shame to kill them.

Biggest catfish: less than a pound. It was an accidental catch while fishing for trout.

Biggest from a lake or pond was an 18 pound channel cat taken from a Holt county farm pond with a lightweight spinning rig, 4 lb. test line while crappie fishing. Talk about stressful, longest time I have ever had a fish on. Largest from a river was about the same size, taken from the Niobrara River near its mouth into the Mo.

I was casting for bass that were schooling in a cove on the Saint John`s river and i caught a 21 1/4 lb cat fish. The bigger surprise was i was using a lure called a Gay-Blade. It`s a really small flat metal minnow shaped lure with
small hooks.
That whiskered puppy gave me a great tussle and after a couple of pic`s were taken i put him/her back.

My grandfather and I caught a 72 lb. blue cat on a trot line in the Big Black River when I was 14. He was a handful and I wish I had a picture. I've caught a 34 lb. flathead out of a hot water heater handgrabbing in Eagle Lake. I have a picture of him, but its not a digital pic. The Big Black River is a tributary of the Mississippi River and Eagle Lake is an oxbow lake off the Mississippi River.

Best catch on a rod & reel was a 69# Blue caught in the Trinity River below Lake Livingston.

On trotlines........a 98# Flathead (Opp) from the Neches River and an 86# Blue, also from the Neches.

On one magic night caught 11 Blues and Flatheads on rod & reel........smallest was 40#, the biggest was the 69# Blue metioned above. Never came close to that night efore or since.

Caught and released two "master angler" award winning channel cats over 34" one day in July in the Red river, north of Winnipeg Manitoba two years ago. Don't know how much a cat about 35" would weigh though.

C&B-34in would read somewhere around 18-20#.

My biggest channel cat was just a shade over 23# and 38" long. IIRC, the state record at the time was just over 25#'s. I've caught several flatheads that went 30-50#'s out of Charles Mill lake in NC OH. I caught the flats with rod and reel, the channel via trotline. I've also caught several channels in the 15-20# range on rod and reel. My honey hole for them(channels) is all of 4ft deep and about 30ft across on the Black Fork river that feeds into Charles Mill. You'd never believe the number of large cats that comes from that small hole.
