I have had all of the brands listed and still have all except the High Standard and Walther.
The best is probably the S&W 41, IMO.
The Ruger is probably the better value.
The Buckmark is my second favorite for shooting.
I regret selling the High Standard...

I have found Colts to be the fussiest and none have really shined in the accuracy department. A Ruger I carried trapping for many years handled about everything run through it.

S&W M41! Interesting 41... Mine is a first year of production and has never been abused...

We are on the same age I got 2 41's both are very good the pickyest one ammo wise is the most accurate with what it likes, but rugers (MKII) seem to eat any ammo even stuff it shouln't and shoot resonably well IMO experiance and I have yet to shoot a "bad" high stanard yet

I haven't shot many semi-auto .22 handguns, but have owned and shot a Ruger Mark II "slabside" for around 15 years now. I traded a rifle scope for it, and the guy who had the Ruger included a 2-7x handgun scope in mounts. It turned out that with the scope, it would put an entire magazine of Winchester Power Points into about an inch at 50 yards, which still seems pretty accurate to me. The trigger pull is darn good, and I've used it to take a bunch of small varmints and edible game. With the scope have killed prairie dogs and ground squirrels out to 100+ yards; with the irons its good to 75 or so, depending on the animal.
The only "problem" I've had with it occurred when using some Remington hollow-points that wouldn't feed. Turned out most of the bullets were oversize. Never had a feeding failure with any other Long Rifle ammo.

For a vintage 22, the High Standard is w/o peer.

S&W #41 is in first place and a Browning Buckmark in second for me.
Had a Ruger Mark I that did not shoot well but the #41 and the Buckmark are golden. All pistols are scoped.
The Buckmark is a lot of pistol for the money and there are a lot of variations.

Best .22 target pistol = S&W 41 with the H-S Victor a close 2nd. Lots of after-market accessories for the S&W 41, not so much for the H-S Victor.
Best .22 plinking pistol = S&W 2206 with adjustable sights, which, when tuned, isn't all that far behind the 41 or the Victor.

Only thing better than the HS Supermatic Trophy is a Hmmerli. S&W 41 is a good semi-auto also but doesn't have the trigger of the Supermatic.

I was raised in Colt and S&W home, no H-S allowed. The Victor was a gift, but I've probably not shot five hundred rounds from it in the twenty years that I've owned it.

Depends on what you want to spend, and how much you want to update and change. For my self the High Standard Supermatic. Had a S&W 41 but it was finicky and never could get it to run right. Either one is expensive now days. The Ruger can be OK but will need work to match the 41 or HS. Browning's are hit and miss, never have shot a Walter target pistol. The normal 22LR autos are not in the same league as a 41 or HS. Only other pistol that has a trigger as good or better than a A High Standard is my S&W 52-2, but it is not a 22LR.
