Why did the 284 Winchester never do as well commercially as the 7mm-08? I would think that this cartridge would stack big game like hotcakes.

1950 something introduction or early 60's same reason as Remington's slow intro of the 280. THE GUNS the dumbasses put them in. Model 100,88 the 740 and 760 all have more collector interest now, than user interest then. Shoot back then the 30-06 and 270 were still considered hot items and the end all of what a ordinary hard working guy could save up to buy. Magnum Man

It was tooooo cool and ahead of its time (short, fat, rebated rim, etc). And as Magnum Man noted, started out in the wrong guns.
But it and its wildcats will be here forever, cause they work for you (and are cool).
If you have something using a 284 case, you probably will keep it. IF you get rid of it, you will probably always regret it.

Already regret rebarreling my 6.5...

Thinking of maybe building a 6-284 in the near future. It's a great case design in all it's various and sundry forms.

Thankfully, the recent popularity of the 6.5-284 means we have GOOD brass available.
