Sitting here this A.M. with my bowl of grits, and got to contemplating the various ways I like them.
This morning it was a half pat of butter, a little brown sugar and some raisins. The other day it was with some crumbled bacon, black pepper, half pat of butter, and some hot sauce.

How do you like yours? Lots of different way to do such a simple breakfast staple.

Lots of butter! And a little sugar...

My favorite is Shrimp & Grits, preferably in Charleston.

Oh man.... Let me count the ways.... with butter, butter and cheese, with 2 over easy eggs mixed in, Cheese and Eggs, then there is bacon, sausage, ham and any combination of all of the above... pretty much anything but nothing sweet in mine.

better yet... how do you cook them. I have found most people that do not like grits have never had them cooked right... I take the quaker quick grits and cook them about 30 minutes on the stove... and I keep adding butter as they cook.... man are they good... (of course it goes with out saying all grits need salt when cooked... smile )

Just butter and a little salt. Pepper okay if you HAVE to. Other than that and you have corrupted something sacred and introduced contaminants.

One exception:

An egg cooked with runny yolk, sunnyside-up, over medium, etc, then broken and allowed to run into the grits, all mixed together and...a biscuit or toast to sop with......mmmmm, heavenly!

edit to add: Anyone found adding sugar to grits should be subject to a severe caning!

if i'm down south and they appear on my plate, i like them either with a little hot sauce or maple syrup. never saw the appeal btw. i guess they are healthy and filling though. that is unless you pound them with sugar and butter.

Butter and pepper. When made for supper (usually with fried fish), I add a whole bunch of cheese.

Nothing better than fried speck (that's seatrout) and cheese grits.

There snubbie, fixed it for you. I think you went a bit light on the penalty for adding sugar though.

This, except I differ on the pepper. I like a good amount of black pepper on my grits and eggs.
