The reason I ask is that I just this weekend acquired two of them and plan to take them to a gun show this weekend in Missoula MT. It has been a very long time since I had one on a table. I want to sell them, not haul them from gun show to gun show for a year, but I would like to get a decent, fair yet good deal for the buyer as well price for each. One looks to be a very old 336 with quite dark Walnut stocks that match perfectly and a Weaver K-4 atop it. The other started in life as a 336T (or Texan) straight grip carbine but a checkered pistol grip stock was put on it. Stock is pretty fancy with diamond pattern skip line type checkering. The lever was not bent to fit the stock, the stock was grooved or inletted very slightly to accept the straight lever loop. A straight grip stock could be re installed on this easily if one preffered to do that.

Anyone care to venture a decent price point for me to start at?

Thanks!

MARK

PS if I keep one, I am thinking of re chambering it to either 30/30AI or 307WCF. Anyone here ever done either conversion?

Blue Book shows $500 at 100% with a 10% premium for 1953-1962 vintage. $450 @ 98%, $400 at 95%.

The Blue Book is often behind a moving market, only reflecting historical sales.

With Marlin, reportedly, in the Remington, et. al. holding company and their QA going South, those older guns may be up by a good bit. I know I'd pay a premium for 50's or 60's gun in great shape.

Just have to shop and see. Would appreciate a follow up.

Mark - this is about ballpark for the Marlins in original condtion, the modified stock may, or may not sell, I'd expect it to lower the overall value. The "plain jane" 336 prices aren't "up" IMO, but are holding very steady for solid hunting rifles. With the Fall seasons coming, August is a good month to move hunting calibers.

I've moved two 336s recently for a friend at $350 each, probably closer to $400 asking price if they were at a show.

I have a first year (1948) 336A in an "F" code in 30/30, that is a solid used rifle, but still not over $450-500 IMO.

AH64,

Thanks, if the plain and somewhat Frankensteined 336 does not sell, it will probably become a 30/30AI or a 307 WCF.

MAYBE, even, a 307 AI!!! smile

(would DEFINATELY want a recoil pad on THAT one... )

It would be worth more as a Texan.I would get a straight stock for it and scrub the one thats on it.

Believe Norman Nonneman does. Think he's in MO. Thought I had him bookmarked but can't find it just now. Your googlefu should help find him.

THANKS! I will bookmark his site shortly.

I sold the Texan 336 and am left with the late 50's early 60's era and REALLY SMOOTH 336 topped with a correct vintage for era Weaver K-4.

Now to decide if I should

1) keep my also newly acquired Savage model 99C in 308 and sell this older 336

OR

2) sell the model 99 and convert this really slick and smooth pre safety 336 with nice wood etc. to either 307 or 30/30AI.

Decisions, decisions.... <G>

Are you guys kidding me? $500 for a plain-Jane walnut 336c?

You can buy them all day long up and down the Shenandoah Valley for $300 to $350 in really nice shape. Nobody is going to pay a premium because it's stamped JM down here.

They sell for $300-$350 around where I am also. That's for a pre-safety Marlin in excellent condition. A lot advertised at $400-$550 but they don't seem to quit being advertised.

Here the 336's go for $350 for guns that are scratched a little and have seen some use. Really clean guns are rare.

The last one I bought was a very clean Texan. Very clean, as in I would rate it 95%+. I paid less than $250 out the door, and it sat on the rack for about three months before I finally gave in and snagged it. Run of the mill 336s sell for $200-$250, with rough ones well under $200.
