After a four years of trying I finally connected with an eastern on openning day here in Indiana. We hunt on pirvate property and there was gobbling all over to the crows, planes, other gobblers. None would gobble to my calls. Around 10:30 I saw a head peaking over the slight ridge on my left hand side. I made a few soft clucks and he started to come over the ridge. His head dropped below the ridgeline and I got my shotgun the rest of the way up. Once I confirmed the bird had a beard, I took him. It was a 25 yrd shot to the head and neck.
He was a 14 lb jake with a three inch beard and 1/4 inch nubs for spurs. Since he is my first bird I am having a tail mount made.
My dad got his bird at 6:30 in the morning while he was trying to set up. He didn't even have to make a call! 19 lbs, 11 inch beard and 22 mm (7/8 inch spurs).
A picture of the two of us back home.
I need to work on my photographic skills, sorry for the washed out photos.
