Formulae for target sighting?
What is the formulae for calculating how high the bullet pattern should be at 100 yards for dead-on at X yards? Presumably it includes MV in fps.

99Savage, A good long range ballistic table done with the bullet you are useing will get you close to knowing where the bullet will be at other yardages other than your zero in place.
You''ll need to chronograph the load out of YOUR rifle, at elevation etc to have the info needed.

Best thing to do is to get the loads and shoot them from the bench or better yet, from your shooting position of choice for hunting at various yardages and see for yourself.
Ballistics are predictable..on paper anyhow...with all parameters known and consistent shooting..

but there's no substitute for the actual shooting.Jim

No real formula, there are tables you can use if you can figure out your velocity. Better yet, there's software that'll do it if you plug in the numbers. I use a freeby called "Point Blank Ballistics" which can be found at:

Use at your own risk.. and never trust the velocities cited in books or by ammo mfrs, they will almost always be higher than what your gun shoots them at.

Lots of manufacturers have some rudimentary ballistics data for their ammo as well.. always a good first place to start. Feel free to PM me if you need any specifics for a given caliber/bullet, I could do one or two up for you as an example.

Tell me the caliber, bullet and muzzel velocity and I'll shoot you some numbers out of one of my books. If you know the Ballistic Coefficient of the bullet, that makes it easier. Mark.

The more you shoot, the more comfortable you will become with your rifle. If you can afford it, do it.

Yeh, but there was an older kid who showed you the basics, not being dumb enough to say "just throw them, I am confident that you will throw somewhere where you will not hit me"
In that spirit, I see/saw no value to shooting up a few boxes until after I got the basics on paper, understood what it meant, then used the ammo to get reduce theory to practice. More efficient.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
