I want to put in for a limited entry elk hunt, not looking for somebody's honey hole just a unit with good public access, prefer middle of the state don't want to mess with Grizz get enough of that here in montana. No horses but willing to backpack and hunt rugged country that's the way I already hunt any advice would be appreciated.

I can get you to a honey hole in unit 97, but you better have several strong backs with you to get the meat/horns out.

Looks like much of 97 is wilderness and thus requires a guide. True?

Lots of 97 is wilderness. While a good unit I would not waste that many points as it usually has leftover type 1 tags every year. You could draw it second choice and keep your points.
