My counter is hardly visible. are there any secrets to taking a 99 apart for cleaning. Have never been there and don't need to reinvent the wheel. It is a F with a rotary mag and a lever safety.

tbjohn, here's my drill on the happy occasions when I adopt another 99. I take off the butt stock and remove the trigger, sear, lever, bolt, etc. just to wipe them off and be sure there are no obvious problems. Remove the fore end to expose the end of the magazine spindle and mark the spindle bell so you can replace it with the same load on the spring. A magic marker will work but I usually put a dimple in it with a center punch so it can't get wiped off. Then remove the spindle screw (It's the small screw that goes through both sides of the front of the receiver between the barrel and magazine.) Then look into the rear of the receiver and locate the rear end of the magazine spindle (It's a slotted screw head about 5/16" in diameter.) Put a screwdriver in the spindle slot and gently tap the magazine assembly forward out of the receiver. Take a wad of 0000 steel wool and polish the brass till it looks like new gold. To reassemble it, replace the magazine in the receiver being careful to get the rear end of the spindle back in its support hole, turn the bell counter clockwise back to its original marked position, and replace the spindle screw.

F's are not take down models. I suggest you do not remove the barrel. No reason. Serious.

Yep, they're just screwed in. But you should use a barrel vice, action wrench, and Kroil to break out a barrel. It can be difficult and there is a risk of scuffing up the finish so I don't go through that aggreivation unless I have to.
