[Linked Image][Linked Image]Bought my first savage a couple of weeks ago. Believe it was made in 1941 but don't have a clue about which version of the 99 it is. How do you tell?

That's an EG. Looks to be a nice one. I can't tell, is it chambered for 300 Savage?

Welcome to the 'board. You've fallen in with a bad bunch. Keep your hand over your wallet.

As noted, it's an EG. Rear sight probably not factory. Aside from that, looks like a nice ,un-messed with 99. A good start.

Nice rifle! Round these parts I think some one call's pistol gripped schnable forended rifles tomato stakes. It might be EG specific, but I have had my G called that. Welcome, I think the EG style is one of savages finest.

A serial number of 422,xxx probably dates to 1943. If you remove the forearm, you'll probably see this on the front:

From at least the late 20's through the 40's they put a stamp on the front of the 99 to show the model. Or at least they usually did. That's a nice EG, probably won't be your last 99 though.

Welcome!

Thanks for the info and sorry about the quality of the pictures. As Calhoun said I looked and it is marked as an EG. It is in 300 Savage snd the serial number is 4128XX so it would be a '41? All 4 serial numbers match. The rear sight is marked "King, Pat. Aug 15, 33".

412,8xx would be 1941... but that picture you posted of the receiver sure looks like 422. grin

I have to agree with Calhoun. Picture sure looks like 4226.

I know what you mean about not being the last. I haven't even gotten the brass and bullet mold yet to load for it and I'm still looking at rifles.

Nice pre war EG.

Don't know what it is, but they just weren't the same after the war.

Nice gun. You might want to keep that one. wink

That rifle is one of the finest deer dispatching tools ever assembled, and the Caliber leaves nothing to be desired. You're going to love it. I've killed a truckload with that exact setup.

Mm

Next you need a 358 win, it's a sledgehammer.

I'm all in for the 358. I have an 1895 SBL in 45-70 that I enjoy very much smile Seems like the older I get the more I enjoy shooting the old calibers.
