Hi guys,

I thought I'd mention something.

I had a 2002 - 2500 Avalanche and one of the accessories available for the Avalanche is a Rear Cargo Liner. Basically, it is a HEAVY liner (kinda like holster ballistic cloth) that slips over the crew cab's folded seat and protects the flat storage area.

I recently bought a 2006+ Chevy Duramax/Allison Crew Cab/Short bed and one of my questions was whether the ultra-useful Avalanche Cargo Liner would fit.

Yes, it does.

Yeah, we could put a tarp or something in the rear, but making it fit and totally protect the seats is an "iffy' thing. The Cargo Liner fits like a glove and keeps dog hair and such where it belongs.

The GM item number is 12497838 and the list price is $50.00. I paid $37.50, plus shipping, to an online vendor.

Here is a photograph of my the rear seat area of my Crew Cab Silverado with the liner in place.

That's really nice Steve. My '02 extended cab had a rear seat that folded like that and it was really nice. The seat on my '04 however is another story. The bottom folds up against the back and you have to set stuff on the carpet. Not nearly as nice or as much room IMO as in the old one.

Dave,

Yeah, I really like the way the crew cab seats fold. It raises stuff up a bit, which I like, and the surface is flat. This makes things in the rear more available from the front seat and it is more convenient for things like large dog crates and such.

We took a holiday at the Oregon Coast last week and the only place that we didn't have sand was under the highly-protective Rear Cargo Liner.

Seeing as the liner is made for the Avalanche, I'll bet that most Silverado/Sierra crew cab owners are not even aware that such a thing exists...and even fewer would know that it actually fits their crew cab rear area.

Soooo, I thought that I would mention it, just to help out fellow Campfire members.

By the way, on our coast trip, hauling our 8,000 pound travel trailer, we towed 381.7 miles and got a fuel mileage of 13.7 mpg. Ya gotta love the Duramax.

Steve,
Thanks for the idea! I haul all kinds of stuff in the back seat area of my '04 Max and usually have to put a blanket down to protect the seat bottoms and carpet. I wonder if you can buy these aftermarket? Thanks again for the heads-up.

Steve I'm really glad to hear the D'max is working so well for you. We went to NC a few weeks back and averaged just under 20 mpg the whole trip. The best day was 21.5 mpg. You might say I'm really sold on the Shell Rotella synthetic now. What a difference. That kind of fuel economy towing sounds great. Glad you two had a great trip.

Greg,

I bought mine from www.buy-oem-parts.com I just checked and they still charge $37.50, plus shipping. It's prettyeasy to order; just go to the Chevrolet section and enter the part number of the liner 12497838, give them a Visa number and it's done. There may be better prices on the Internet, but this sounded good enough for me. The shipped promptly and I had the liner in about ten days.

The parts department at most GM dealers will charge the suggested retail of $50.00.

I have seen only one used Rear Cargo Liner. A guy over at www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com had one for sale in the Classifieds for $30.00 plus postage. It looked like a rhino had crapped on it, hooked it with is horn and dragged it over the hi-veldt for a while. Somehow, it seemed worth the extra $7.50 to get a new one.

You will find that this will be one of your most often used accessories.

Hey Dave,

Sounds like your Duramax is running quite well. Surprisingly, my truck came with GM Redline Synthetic oil. Yeah, surprised me, as well.

I'll probably change oil early on the first change, just to make sure that tie engine is clean. I'm planning on an oil change, as well as fuel filter, Allison spin-on filter and a change out of the differential fluids (to grape juice) at 3,000 miles or so.

Here is a photo of Barky II when we were at Pacific City.

I'm getting good fuel economy now. I changed my oil with Mobil 1 Truck & SUV recently and realized the next day that Mobil had changed their marketing program (again) and the Truck & SUV is no longer for diesels. Mobil did refund my money. I was thankfull for that but since the Turbo Diesel Mobil is still not available I tried the Rotella synthetic and my fuel economy went up immediatly. I had run Mobil 1 in the '04 it since it was new. I'm probably going to stick with Shell for a while but I hear the Red line products are good. Nice looking photo. Can you park the camper right there on the beach? All you need is to catch some grunion and you'll be all set!

Friend Dave,

The Pacific City Thousand Trails park is less than a mile from our favorite beach, so we drove to it. The park itself is maybe a hundred feet above South end of the beach and there is a trail to it. Gorgeous coastal setting and a very high-quality camping situation.

Our favorite beach is about three miles long and is protected by a huge cape at either end. Seldom are there more than tow or three people on it. Libby, our Scottish terrorist, loves to explore the beach off-leash.

Talk to you soon, my friend.
